Swiss Cantons (Zürich): silver "city view" 1/2-thaler (1 gulden of 36 schillings), 1739 Obverse: MONETA REIPUBLICÆ TIGURINÆ, Oval arms of Zürich supported by rampant lion facing left. Reverse: TIGURUM, city view with date below. Issuer: Swiss Canton of Zürich, as a city republic. Specifications: Silver, 32 mm approx. Grade: PCGS AU58; cert. #81375726. Reference: KM-146, PCGS-797233, Numista 59526. Provenance: ex-Atlas Numismatics, USA, 7 June 2017. Notes: The Romans founded the city of Zürich and called it Turicum. That placename underwent several variations in spelling throughout history, and is rendered as "TIGURUM" on this early 18th century coin. Comments: "City View" coinage is always popular, and if you zoom in on the higher resolution TrueView image of this coin on the PCGS site, you can explore the scene in intricate detail. 049500S
It's nice to see NGC's True-View-comparable photos are better than the pictures on their cert pages and the ratty "Internet Imaged" photos scans I wasted money on once. That's a nice picture, and a very handsome coin.
Sharp! I wonder what that star by the sword means. I notice my coin and yours have it, while the one @Chris B posted does not. Some kind of privy mark or mintmaster symbol, perhaps? Click here to zoom in: Oh, and here is a wretched cellphone photo of the slab, for scale:
Design and color both are great. I've been hesitant to give these polls a 10, but I think I will on this one.
An absolute 10 from me. Fantastic coin! I love city views and the obverse. Nothing not to absolutely love about this one. This is by far my favorite of all the coins you've posted with ranking options.
