I was a bit split between posting this in the ancients versus world coin forum but since some of the Islamic caliphates coincide as far back as even Byzantine times I reckon posting in the Ancients section isn't all that inappropriate. In any case post your examples of Islamic gold. I'll begin with a piece from the Ikhshidids I recently picked up in the Steven Album auction in the name of Muhammad b. Tughj. 935-946, AV dinar. Minted in good old Misr which I believe coincides with Cairo in English?

I bought several Islamic and Mughal coins recently and spent some time attempting to read the Arabic text on them with the help of Richard Plant's book Arabic Coins and How to Read Them. Sellers usually just give the basic information, date, mint, sultan, and weight. For an interesting story look up Harun al-Rashid's son al-Amin.
Hi All, Egyptian gold from Alexandria (Al-Iskandariya). From the seller's description: "Salah al-Din (Saladin) the sultan who established the Ayyubid dynasty and ruled Egypt and Syria in the period 564 - 589 AH (1169 - 1193 CE). His full name being, Al-Nasir Salah al-Din Yusuf and better known in the western world as Saladin. The coin cites al-Nasir as the Abbasid Caliph at the time. Both mint and date of minting are very clear and legible on the reverse." - Broucheion
I'm assuming, from the title of this thread, that its OK to post all Islamic coins, Ancient, Medieval and Modern..... Ayyubids, Al Nasir Yusuf I (Salah Al-Din/Saladin) bought a few dinars but I'll post a couple here: Cairo Mint Alexandria Mint
