Anything Special About This 1951 Great Britain Crown?

    Here is a coin that looks to have some minor issues, does anything about it look different - sorry about the lint/dust?

    Someone appears to have taken some steel wool or something to the right field of the obverse

    Yes, done at the mint but that is not it (oops that was a hint).

    Nope. That's not it. I will say this: the coin is a pattern.

    Well, excellent tries. This coin was purchased 5/6 years ago from Mark Rasmussen List. It is a pattern of the Royal Mint and in fact is a pattern for the legend on the obverse - rather block-like font lettering that is quite similar to that on the pattern 1950 Four Shillings piece. The area of "rubbed" metal to the right of KG6 bust is likely an etched control number and was done by the Royal Mint.
    I know, not that exciting, but late date pattern crowns of any sort are rather rare.
