How to arrange your world coins?

How do you arrange your world coins? I'm sure that you have struggled with & discussed this in some previous threads.

For me, flipping through 2x2 boxes is not as much fun as flipping through a logically organized book of coins. If you have a large quantity of world coins, how do you arrange your world coins so you can enjoy looking at them? I’d really like to hear some ideas.

One way I found is to fill a couple Dansco books with one coin from each country. That one coin can occasionally be exchanged with a coin from the world coin hoard. There are a couple empty 2x2s in the book holding space for future examples. Inserting one coin from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe completely fills two Dansco books. Today, I pulled the New Zealand coin from the book and replaced it with this 1956 Penny from New Zealand. Someday, I might swap the Penny for another New Zealand coin.

In another Dansco book, I decided to keep all bi-metallic coins (Again only keeping one bi-metal coin per country in the book. Without this bi-metal book, all the bi-metals would be mixed in with thousands of world coins in the 2x2 boxes.

How else do you organize large quantities of world coins?

    Very best regards,

2X2's in vinyl pages in binders. A binder for each letter of the alphabet, multiple binders for a few letters, China has it's own binder, maybe two now. In each binder countries are in alphabetical order and then the coins for each country are in KM# order with spaces for KM#'s I don't have yet. I think there are about 38 binders now. That will probably increase soon, I have about 3,000 pieces I need to put into the binders now. At last count I had a little over 22,000 different types.

I have thousands of World coins and I arrange it Alphabetically in an Album for each continent for coins I only collect by types and an Album for each country for coins I collect by years. All my albums are the same so it looks like an encyclopedia.

All my notes are in albums by country with the exception of my polymers they are in a seperate album and I am running out of space fast LOL

I use the 2X2 holders and the 20 pocket per page to hold my circulating collection. I have 4 large binders which I have labeled Europe Book 1, Europe Book 2, North America, Asia.
Book 1 contains Germany, Great Britain, Greece, and France
Book 2 has the remaining European Nations
North America has Canada, Mexico, South and Central America
Asia has China, Japan, South East Asia, and Oceania
I use an Excel spread sheet to list the nations alphabetically and by denomination
I list the metal composition, values and any comments of interest.
I currently have 116 countries and about 1100 different coins.
My Uncirculated Euro collection is in a special Dansco.
My World Silver collection is kept in Airtites in an Eagle binder with special pages to hold the airtites.

I can't get this to show the Excel format. Just pretend you see borders and every thing lined up nice and neat. In the bottom photo you can see part of the index page. I have since reformatted from landscape to portrait.

I print the pages and insert in a sleeve as an index to each section in the books.

This is a LOT of work but the results are organized and make showing my collection much easier.

The duplicate coins are kept in a special cabinet with drawers labeled by country.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks to everyone that provided information. It is all nice & has given me ideas about organizing my world coin collection. Here is an executive summary describing these organizational methods (in no particular order):

Euros in special Dansco or dedicated Euro Albums.

Binders with one coin from each country which can occasionally be exchanged with different coins from the world coin hoard

Arrange the coins by order of a map, West to East & North to South.

Store duplicate coins separately (in a cabinet).

Binders organized alphabetically by country name with each country organized by KM# (Leaving space at each country and/or for KM# where needed)

Binders for type coins organized alphabetically for each continent and binders for each country for coins collected by years.

Binders for bi metal (arranged by country). Binders for Euros (in dedicated Euro albums). Binders for notes arranged by country with polymers in a separate album. Silver crown size coins in display trays.

Binders for (1) Germany, Great Britain, Greece, & France. Binders for the balance of Europe. Binders for North & Central America. Binders for Asia including China, Japan, South East Asia, and Oceania.

Binders specifically for world silver coins which may be housed in Airtites & Eagle binders.

Use Excel to list COUNTRY, DENOMINATION, YEAR, COMPOSITION, VALUE, and COMMENTS which can be printed & kept with each binder.

All my wold coins are carefully strewn from my kitchen table, over a couple chairs, thence to a coffee table, and sadly, sometimes dropped on the rug!
My wife has mentioned there might be a better way!

Mine are in 2x2s and some envelopes, arranged more or less alphabetically, in a small box that was once used to hold slides. (What are slides, daddy?)

Thalia Elizabeth's world coins are a little better organized. She has a binder for Canada only, another one for Great Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth, and one for all other countries. Each binder has a number of clear plastic pages which hold 2x2s, the last few pages have larger slots for "crown size" holders (2 1/2 x 2 1/2s, not always easy to find around here).

The latter two books are arranged alphabetically with spaces left for new arrivals. The British Commonwealth binder is inventoried (finally).

    collection organized by DATE

Recently, I've been buying coins from an old time collector. He has about 1 zillion world coins and he has them organized by date! This makes it nearly impossible to locate a particular example quickly. However, this is compensated by the order (or lack of order) making it very fun to look through the collection. He is a collector not a dealer. He doesn't need to be organized like a dealer.

He has the entire collection in dozens of 3-ring binders each with ten 20 pocket vinyl pages. The collection is divided into sections by date. 1800 to 1810 might be four binders. 1810 to 1820 might be in another 3-4 binders and so on. Inside each group of dates, there is no further organizational order except to make each page fun to inspect. One page might be all copper but that is just because those coppers are all fun to view at once. One page might include a coin from Afghanistan & the coin next to it might be from Zanzibar. The only thing that ties the coins together is that they are from the same period of time.

I put all mine in the appropriate size flip. I have a large desk with many drawers...I am pretty scattered in how I file them...that is...I put them in rows but not organized in any particular way...the next coin I get is the next coin in line. So needless to say, if I need to find a specific coin...good luck because there is no order. I keep common world coins in the two biggest drawers, I keep very rare coins and gold coins in another, notgeld and tokens in another, ancients in another, medals in another, scrap silver in another. again...no particular order in how they are filed.

I plan to go through the whole collection this year to check the condition of each coin, make sure iron isnt rusting or BD isnt rearing its ugly head....I might try to put them in order by country at that time. My nephew wanted a Japanese coin to take to school for a project he was doing on Japan...it took me an hour to find them because I have no filing system. I am more of a hoarder...I get shiny metal things and pack them away in my nest. I need to be more organized about it.

    Hello ManlyChris,
I'm glad to let you know what has worked for me. All my raw world coins are identically labeled & stored in 2x2 cardboard holders with Mylar windows. The bulk common world coins are stored in double row boxes. It is easy to accumulate thousands of bulk coins & the double row boxes consume minimum space. They are arranged by country, denomination, & then date. In order to enjoy the nice coins, I have put the nice or expensive ones in 1/2" wide 3-ring binders. These will hold 8 or 9 of the 20 coin pages. I prefer 1/2" to larger binders. These 3-ring binders are also arranged by country, denomination, & then date. I also have a 1-coin per country set which is kept in 3 Dansco books. The Dansco books hold about nine of the 12 coin pages each.
    Very best regards,
