Ah no Arlington national cemetery was the Lee's family plantation .
Lee was a west point grad.he had as many class mates who fought against him.
The war has been over for what 150 years? Since Lee surrenders at a court house, but it really never ended . As most wars never end....it just packed up and moved else where.....
I'm sorry no disrespect to anyone or their family but when you surrender you lost.
You cause ,colors, and army are dismantled.
In this case as others that never happen...it was allowed to....smolder and burn...in the hearts of many on both sides North and South.
I was fortunate enough to have a professor in college who to my liking finally taught his classes the right, left, and middle views of US history.
History taught with truth not a text book view of candy coated history....that views
Are determine on where you went to school.....
I'm quite sure that the members of the greatest generation ever would of put up with a Nazi or Japanese flag allowed to be flown.

Or a likeness of their leaders to stand....in any forum.
This country needs to heal....from a war that ended over a 150 years ago.
Im sorry I need not look at a likeness of anyone who cause was lost, esspecially if that likeness is a symbol of slavery, or any other crimes against humanity.
There are no statues of Hitler.....in Germany.
    They pulled down Sadam statues.
Now I do understand still waters run deep....time does at some point in history heal wounds....
I understand that family history is important...and should be passed on to family members... but not rubed in the noses of others ...who are correct to say you lost!
Your colors, flag, ideology gone...im sorry this country at this point needs to focus on uniting not dividing... we have lost almost over 150,000 people...to a virus that should Unite U.S. not divide us.
This virus could damn well kill us all...It doesn't care the color of your skin, your poiltics, your wealth status, what it does care about is completely destroying humans....all humans.
We as humans seem to get side tracked...we loose sight of what is important ..like
Live, Liberty, and freedom to agree to disagree. The right to live in peace...
History does repeat itself....as a student of I have seen it with my eyes,as well read in books....
Many a civilized socity on this planet have disappeared leaving huge cities in ruins. Do you believe that it cant happen again...think again! This isnt over....nor is the growing pains that we all feel.....

    Interesting medal.

Statues aren't history. It won't be erased or forgotten if they are removed. Statues are differential reverence not history. If you get your history from monuments then you need to read more. That being said I understand why some might not like certain ones that glorify those who fought to continue owning human beings.we need more statues that show reverence to men like Charles Sumner or even Sam Houston who, after serving as Senator, Governor of two states, the President of a republic, the general who defeated Santa Anna and who proposed giving native Americans their own land...sacrificed all the good will of such a life by opposing breaking away from the union becoming a pariah, willing to give up slavery for the union.

Then again, all people are flawed. We should not mythologize them but see them as they really were, warts and all.

Let's not forget the right to own humans was a prominent reason for seceding in Texas and other state's declaration of causes.

Robert E. Lee even opposed it.

"As regards the erection of such a monument as is contemplated, my conviction is, that, however grateful it would be to the feelings of the South, the attempt, in the present condition of the country, would have the effect of retarding instead of accelerating its accomplishment, and of continuing if not adding to the difficulties under which the Southern people labor."

He was opposed to continuing to fly the Confederate flag. He was also opposed to memorializing battlefields. The fact that such rancor always arises when these things come up shows he was probably right.

    It will all be remembered...

BTW, my family has been in the south for many generations and fought for the Confederacy (Georgia and Tennessee).

As for the statues. I don't care that much. They don't offend me but I am not black and I can maybe understand why they don't like them in prominent places however as is often the case, it might be taken a bit overboard. I can imagine that if I lived in a town that had reverential statues of men who fought to continue owning people who looked like and owned my ancestors a few generations earlier...I might not like it.
