I never buy the slab as a preference. I liked the coin. I now have a 63 to go with it, and that is a blazer. It has been posted here a few times.
Here is a curveball. Could I have discovered that this is actually a mechanical error? You said it went from NGC 62 to a PCGS 58. How come the PCGS CoinFacts has it and it’s TV listed as a 62. I swear there are more than 10 marks I can match to your photo in the OP. OP. PCGS Coinfacts 62 TV Matching marks
If my post ain’t a best answer than I don’t know what is. Maybe it was in PCGS 62 before and it crossed to NGC as a 62. You didn’t show the Cert but the photos I have do so you can see if they match. Regardless - it is the exact same coin and I am certain of that.
I was joking saying that my post (#23) should qualify as a "best answer." There are only 2 options. Either PCGS saw this coin before it was an NGC 62 and they deemed it a 62 and noted the specific VAM. It then went into NGC 62 plastic and then again back to PCGS as a 58 by you. Or it is a mechanical error and in fact is a PCGS 62. I was saying in the TV it list the cert number as 32624900. You have the PCGS AU58 in hand so I was saying do the cert numbers match or is it different.
The plot thickens -- https://www.pcgs.com/cert/32624900 certainly does look an awful lot like the OP coin.
They match. You mean, it is a mechanical error, and it did cross as a 62? I need to contact PCGS. Thanks.
I think its a mechanical error and they swapped two labels. Did you know this was the VAM as listed above. VAM 1H Polishing Lines. PCGS shows only 11 in that grade with 37 graded higher.
No, I didn’t as I am not a VAM collector. Wow. Think I have to submit it for re-labeling. I keep all my submission receipts. Thanks so much!!!
Good luck! Post here and let us all know the outcome. Great news is the VAM1H doubles in value. They don't have a price listed for 62 but a 63 is listed at $700. Hopefully you are chanting those unprintable words starting with F and S in a positive light now. I just verified that it does appear to be the assigned VAM of 1H. It has all the tells that I can see. Vam World 1H http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1921-P_Peace_VAM-1H True View https://www.pcgs.com/cert/32624900
Oh definitely. In my 60 years of coin collecting, I have never seen anything like this. It is a huge screw up. Thanks, and will repost results.
Ok, mystery solved. It is not the same coin. Cert. numbers do not match. Somehow, my crossover coin got associated with the wrong cert number, and TruView. I think it was a clerical error. Went through my home vault, and went through hundreds of Morgan and Peace Dollars, and dug out this baby. Here are multiple pictures of my 1921 Peace Dollar that was an NGC 62, and now a PCGS AU 58. I messaged PCGS yesterday, and they will do a free re-evaluation of grade, and a new TruView. Thank you, @kSigSteve, as your knowledge of VAMs brought to my attention a pretty glaring error. The culprit, in the flesh:
Case closed. Glad I was able to help. I was hoping it would have been a mechanical error and it was in fact the 62 VAM 1H. Good luck on the re-evaluation.
Thanks. When this happened, I thought I was going crazy. I have a lot of coins, and had to look for a while to sort things out. As many know, I tend to be a fussy collector, and don’t like messes. It would be nice if this came back MS, after all the nuisances. Looking at it carefully, it is a clear slider, and would not be surprised at a low MS grade. I think it may be weakly struck, and is a 61 or 62. Thanks, again! Dave
