Can you guess the MINT of this silver dollar? Many advanced collectors/dealers can tell the Mint where a Morgan dollar was struck by its rim and the appearance of its surface. This coin has a little circulation so the "look" of its luster will not help. By popular demand...Answer in SIX WEEKS.
Not a Morgan expert, but I’d guess it’s an 1893-P VAM5 as the date is set further left than normal (near date), the 9 is closed and the 3 is open. It could also be NO VAM3 slanted date...!?
I don't have my books with me (I'm on CT at work )...but I'm inclined to think New Orleans. I want to say the slanted 9 was on the 93-O. Plus...the die looks like it wasn't that well polished as the fields look a bit rougher. I know that quality control was less of a concern in NO so I'm thinking New Orleans.
I'm not a dollar guy, but I think I've heard the New Orleans mint did good work and that looks like a good strike so I'll say "O"
Not CC, because they didn't make coins in 1898. Not O, because it looks circulated. Probably S, because that's where the money is in this alteration.
I know for certain it isn’t an 1893 S. The upright of the 1 should be squarely over a dentil. The last digit does appear to be expertly altered, with only the slightest evidence of tooling. Messydesk said it best:
Guys, pretty sure you already have your answer. I'll leave it up to you folks to figure out which one it is
Now that I have read what others have to say...I need to point out that I missed the altered 3. Not because I didn't see it...but I was looking so hard at the fields and looking for any kind of "mint characteristic" I could deduce...I simply overlooked it. I agree, the 3 was altered from an 8. So, it could only be a P/O/S minted coin. While the 1893-S is the most valuable 93...all 1893 coins are worth significantly more than their 1898 counterpart and an 1893-O is less likely to arouse draw attention. I'm going to stick with my original O mint belief based on the fields and devices looking to have a looser quality control. But, I admit I "missed the forest for the trees" in this case. Final answer is 1898-O altered to look like a 1893-O.
