Found this 1857 1 cent at work, was actually going to post this under What's it Worth forum to get an idea of the grade of the coin but decided to get a closer look on the obv and rev of the coin, let me know what you think and possible grade? Thanks!
strange, I don't see the 8 & 5 doubling on the original coin. Are they the same piece? also, on the reverse, the two areas are small cuds
The photos are indeed of the same coin, which is evident if you enlarge the first photo and compare them. I did not find this repunched date variety in Richard Snow's Attribution guide and would suggest you submit it to Richard for attribution. It might be a new variety. Richard's website is: https://www.indiancent.com/
Yes it's the same coin I just took a close up picture with a USB microscope for the date since my cellphone can't really focus on that detail
Apparently there's several different varieties for this coin year just didn't get much time last night tondo much research but thanks for the input
Welcome to CT @JimR_Coins. When you say you, "Found this 1857 1 cent at work," was it in change or hidden away somewhere? I can't imagine it was in circulation but stranger things have happened. It is a nice looking coin and a keeper, but I'll go with Fred's evaluation, MD, as he has the years of experience.
Yeah my family owns a few grocery stores, when I was resetting some of the cashier tills saw that coin in one of them as well as a few west point mint 2019 quarters this past week which was also a nice find
Miraculous find. As for the varieties, the doubling does look like machine doubling, but I could be wrong. The cuds, however, do look to be promising. I do not see them here: https://indianvarieties.com/pennies/flying_eagle_cents/1857-flying-eagle-penny/
