A quick story: My dad gave me for Christmas back in 1976, a Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel folder and a small coin book. I didn't do anything with them for about 6 months, till one night he sat me down with his piggy bank and my piggy bank, and we started filling in my folders. Then he brought out his Mercury Dime and Buffalo nickel folders he had been keeping all these years to show me. I was hooked, and coin collecting has become my obsession for the last 40+ years!

I started coin collecting as a kid in the 1980s when my aunt gave me a handful of change after shoveling snow off her driveway, and a wheat penny was included. My dad is a coin collector, and he took me a to a local dealer one day. I got a glimpse of how expansive (and expensive) the hobby can be. My dad suggested I start off with something inexpensive, and there was a used coin album for sale for nickels from 1938-61. And that's how I got interested in collecting silver coins. So now my collection mostly has pennies, silver currency, silver eagles, and silver bullion from other countries.

I didn’t join Coin Talk for the contests, but it certainly is nice that there are some generous people who make the contests happen. My thanks to all involved.

I did join Coin Talk for the wealth of information it might provide, and I haven’t been disappointed.

I realize this is a bit mundane, but I’m really excited that I just got my first newsletter from my state numismatic association. Two years ago I finally retired from my main job (teaching) and eventually realized I should get back to my childhood hobby of coin collecting. More recently I joined the state organization and also the local coin club. Pre-covid, I went to three of the monthly local club meetings, and now the state newsletter has come in. There were some helpful articles, ads from some dealers, and announcements of upcoming shows. Just one more indication that I am back into coin collecting after a very significant time away and having fun.

Reminds me- I need to add this one to the Pick Bin prize basket. It is an option, if the winner of Prize #1 so desires...
