its crazy to see altered dates go for so much money, especially one that looks like it was recently done... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1798-s-182-draped-bust-large-cent-w-date-altered-to-1799-read-description/254572979847?hash=item3b45bb6687:g:EwMAAOSwOJhef6m7
That’s crazy. These altered to rare date large cents seem to pop up frequently in old “one a year” date collections. Must of the dealers I know have treated them as junk. Now people are paying hundreds of dollars for them. If they want more, there are plenty of engravers who will supply them.
Exactly its like theres a new cottage industry for them. Just some guy engraving dates in his garage now making good money.
The only altered date large cents that worth anything to collectors are the well done 1815 pieces. For those who are not familiar with the cents, 1815 is the only year in which no large cents were made. In fact it's the only missing date in the entire U.S. cent series.
