Well the boss bought a rather nice collection today. The people had arranged to bring it in and we have bought some of their other stuff but BOY did I see some STUFF! Sure there was some "minor" stuff like the Jefferson nickel set and some ugly buffaloes. The Mercury dime set was a bit nicer. The 16-D should garner a VG and the 42/1 was nice. Half dollars included a complete Walker set a few Liberty Seated and a nice 1807 Bust. A few dollar coins in that book as well. Nothing fancy just a few Seated a Trade and the 1798 and 1799 Bust Dollars. Oh, and then the best book. A COMPLETE set of Standing Liberty Quarters complete with 1916 and 1918/17-S. Only problem with a lot of the coins I've mentioned were cleaning at some point. This is an OLD collection and there are signs of past cleaning. However, the 1916 grades about F12, the 18/17 closer to XF. The 21, 23-S and 27-S all in the XF range. The set, and many of the others, will end up at ANACS or NGC. I only wish I had pictures folks but they are locked up at work. Was just REALLY cool to get a good look at all of these coins in one day
No doubt but can't say we see stuff like this on a regular basis. I've known the boss for many years now and the last thing of this magnitude was when he had 3 1856 Flying Eagle cents. I was one of the few customers at that time that got to see them and it was another dealer that told me he had them. Not that I'm complaining but you do have a good point. I spent a good part of today wading through some horribly worn World Paper money. The majority of it ended up in the "25 cents and up" bargain box. The highest value on any note I found was $10 so seeing a few coins waltz in that are well over $1000 was a nice change of pace for sure.

Well, It was an older couple and the boss paid them $40 for the whole collection. Seriously, he only gave them $40 and A LOT OF GOLD. The last batch they brought in they traded for a lot of silver. This couple didn't need the money but unfortunately Ruben is right as well. Most of the "small stuff" we buy anymore is from people that have to sell it.
the Baltimore Whitman show is next week - foreclosures are up, unemployment is up - the family heirlooms will be for sale. it's sad, but if it's the house or grand dad's old coins, i'm keeping the house... i have seen some fine sets broken apart, the most recent a very nice silver 5 cent Canadian set. -Steve
Yeah it is rare to see things like that come into a store - at least according to my local dealer. I was just happy I got down there to see a complete type set that came in before it was broke up. Every slot was filled with nice coins - except for the IHC, it was a harshly cleaned and polished. Not all the coins were perfect, but on the whole the set was really nice. I liked looking at that set more than anything else - it beats searching thru the 2x2's(still fun, but not as fun as the type set). The best thing was I got to pick a few coins from the type set first - almost hated to, but some of the older bust stuff was already sold and the guy was coming down to pick them up later. That was a good day.
That's when you go for it Mark. You know the set will be broken up and my boss/dealer does like to turn things fast if he can. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to go after any of the "big dogs" in the set but I may consider a few others. Even some of the "leftovers: would be nice.
