Since it is pretty obvious, from all of my GTG posts, I have been collecting early Jeffersons, both MS and Proof. I have decided to also collect the early Washington Quarter proofs, as well. They are uncommon, and low mintage, if not rare. So, I started with this 1941, which has a mintage of 15,000, and is still reasonable to purchase. This one seemed to be a nice coin, with no spotting, and reasonably clean fields. It has some light toning on the reverse. Seller’s picture, as I have not gotten it delivered yet. Comments appreciated, as I do not know the series all that well. I am aware that early proofs are rarely cameo, and not especially well struck.
Sounds like a fun project! And yes cameo is almost impossible to find on the early proofs (1936-1942). The 1936 will be your most expensive while the other dates should be more affordable.
The 1936 is brutal, price wise. Going to go from 1936-60, as I am doing Jeffersons from 1938-60. Most interested in the low mintage proofs, because of exclusivity. Want to keep it between 65 and 67 grade wise.
I'm about to embark on a full MS Washington Quarter set with all proofs and die combinations set...at least that's the goal. That 1936 Proof is the most brutal of the bunch.
I actually like Washington quarters, especially the earlier ones in high relief. Its a tragedy what they have done to it today. Its a nice looking coin in higher relief, (though not NEARLY as good as what it replaced, the SL quarter.
I wish you success in your endeavor to get those proofs. You've started well with this one I think. It looks great.
Nice project. If you are going to be buying on eBay, PLEASE make sure to read the fine print. I just sent a person beginning a Washington series collection a heads up about a purchase. The seller of the piece that he is contemplating has listed further down in the sales webpage that the picture of the piece is a "stock" picture, so the buyer really has NO idea what the seller might actually send him. Further, if the buyer doesn't like the piece, he can't just contact the seller, he has to go through eBay. Aside from that little heads up, HAVE FUN on your project!!! Washingtons are a GREAT series!!!
Thanks for comments, folks. Before buying the coin, I messaged the seller, as I have bought many coins from him. I told him my intentions, and since he knows what I like, he said “it is a really nice coin, good eye appeal, nice and bright, with a somewhat soft strike, that cost it a 67.” I figure that was just fine with me.
Best bought in person or from someone you really trust. Take your time, don't buy something ugly or with spots. Have fun!
I have bought many coins from David Lawrence over the years. I used to go to a few dealers and shows, but now that isn’t happening. I have selected eBay friends who have return policies.
I have found his coins to be of sound quality and grade. I have not ventured into pre 1955 proofs, but did purchase all the mint state coins slabbed from 1938 to 1941, some of them from there.
David Lawrence is one of my favorites. On buy it items, they are very receptive to reasonable offers.
