Until the 1830's Jamaican currency was the Spanish Real (the famous "pieces of eight"). The standard British coinage of the time was then introduced with much apprehension of the population. In 1960 the Bank of Jamaica was given sole right of minting and in 1968 voted to decimalise their currency, creating the Jamaican dollar. This commmorative non-circulating coin of 10 years of independence was minted only in 1972 with 42,000 uncirculated and 33,000 proof versions. My one pictured here was poorly struck on the reverse with the rim defined only at the top of the coin and the field almost level with the rim at the bottom. That’s a nice one. I have one I got at an antiques mall a couple years ago. It’s a nice hefty chunk of silver.
