Greetings all, I have had these two Silver Dollars for quite some time. One is an American Silver Eagle and the other is a Peace Dollar. Both are used with a chain in order to make a Silver Dollar necklaces. I assume that over the years both of these dollars have toned and also picked up some type of environmental damage or some kind of damage that I am not aware of. Can any one tell by looking at the pics provided what kind of surface damage both coins have? If so, can they be repaired or should I just leave them alone? Any help regarding this subject would be greatly appreciated. There are hundreds and hundred's years of experience; both in grading and overall appearance over a vast arena of coins both domestically and internationally on these forums and I hope someone can provide some education and assistance. I also hope the pics are useful. If not no problem, no worries. Enjoy what remains of your day.
Those were both quite nice coins at one time. They will now forever be jewelry quality coins. And that in and of itself isn't a terrible thing. I own jewelry quality gold coins....... Usually the jeweler will polish the coins to death before he mounts them. Then years of rubbing and banging around on a persons neck..... There is no repairing them. Just enjoy them as they are.
At least they're super-common dates. I once had a proof Trade Dollar that had been holed and engraved for use as a pendant.
Thanks for your replies...but does anybody recognize what type of damage these coins endured? They must to have come in contact with some substance or something else...maybe cigarette smoke? (I don't smoke) from a previous owner...it just bothers me that I might never know what caused this damage. Oh well such is life.
Looks like the Peace dollar had been lacquered at one point. Start off with a acetone bath and see what happens. At this stage of the life of these coins they have already bottomed out in terms of value so you can't hurt them.
You name it and they've probably seen it. The abuse from being in a bezel, banging around and bumping into any and everything. Smoke, sweat and who knows what. What a shame and a waste of nice coins. Allbthey ate good for now is junk silver or jewelry. Might as well be used as jewelry.
I agree with everyone above, that they've been polished, big time. But I think they might have been heated first, to get the toning.
