What kind of music do ancient collectors listen to?

The kind of questions people ask you may wonder... But actually this is a fun little thread that got the inspiration from similar threads like 'Who are you?' and the hobbies one.

Reading the replies in those threads I got the impression that we are a pretty interesting bunch. Popular belief would make you think that coin collecting is boring and that collectors (especially the ones of ancients) are old misers dressed in tweed ruining their posture over a table full of precious coins.

That doesn't seem to be the case. We are a diverse lot from different backgrounds and an array of interesting professions with even more interesting hobbies. What surprised me in the 'Who are you' thread is that there are lots of collectors in the age range of 30 to 60. I would expect that especially with collectors of ancient coins the medium age would be higher, but I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of young people I saw. This means that the future of coin collecting is looking good. I am also younger that you think. The 'Only a Poor Old Man' refers to a classic Scrooge McDuck comicbook story by Carl Barks.

So I figured that we may have interesting tastes in music too. The good thing about this kind of thread is that can be a goldmine of musical information and may open our eyes to genres of music we didn't know exist. The popular music that somebody finds on the TV and radio nowdays represent only a tiny percentage of the wonderful music there is out there. Share your musical tastes please. It doesn't matter if it is mainstream or unique, somebody will probably appreciate it either way.

Let me make a start. I am a metalhead. I like metal and heavy rock and love music that incorporates technical guitar and bass elements. Lately I came to love the fusion of traditional and modern instruments with a rock twist. I am very interested in Japanese modern and traditional culture and I found the following band that combines rock with traditional Japanese instruments like the koto and shamisen and traditional enka singing. Every member of this band is a virtuoso in their field and the result is phenomenal.

Here is a taste of them live. The shamisen solo in the middle is the dog's boxxxxks!

Classical, here. Especially Bach and Beethoven, and the Romantics. Love the earlier Russians before Stravinsky. Grieg holds a special place in my heart: I've visited his home in Bergen, Norway, many times, first as a tourist, and then as a guide.

    OK, I'll bite...since I have at least 1 ancient, I qualify! :D

I like Classic Rock, but my real "go-to" is Southern Rock, such as:

The Outlaws (5 lead guitars; check out Green Grass & High Tides),

Molly Hatchet (check out Flirtin' with Disaster, my grandkids' - all 10 of them - theme song)

    The Marshall Tucker Band

Of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, and the like.

But I also frequently listen to the great Big Bands from the 40's, fantastic sounds!

At our marriage, the classic 'wife is brought by her father'-walk was accompanied by the opening chorale of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach's Magnificat:

Really - music that blows you away. Imho, CPE Bach has a tendency for over-dramatization (especially compared his father JS Bach), but not in this case. About his father, JS Bach, a writer I often read wrote:
"Johan Sebastian Bach has a couple of ways to celebrate: trumpets with chorals. However, he knows thousands of methods for lamentation" (or something like this) - Maarten 't Hart. I really can't get enough of JS Bach ... however, his contemporary colleague Jan Dismas Zelenka (not well-known, unfortunately) is almost equally gifted and should get more attention:

Oldies, 50s-1970s, love the 80s since that's the time period I grew up to.

I mainly listen to metal/Symphonic Metal & Goth. Especially from other countries.

I don't care for most mainstream American music. How it passes as music is beyond me.

And the worst for me is Rap/Hip Hop. I truly can't stand any of it.

I do like old 80s rap, just not gangster.

Everything that my ears will enjoy. Classical (Mozart more favored) to Rock. I also enjoy Celtic, New Wave, African, Quechuan, Chinese, Tibetan Chants, whatever sounds good to my ears.

Otherwise, I do not have the “need” to have music in the background.

Sometimes, silence is very therapeutic for thinking or meditation.

Like my taste in coins, my taste in music is rather eclectic, and occasionally esoteric.

I’m not your typical 27 year old from the big city. Most of my friends like hip hop, but I can get into just about anything.

My favorites are all classic rock though. The Beatles are the single greatest band of all time (and they have a great song for history buffs, revolution). They will NEVER be displaced.

Then you have U2, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones. I also love piano, so Billy Joel and Elton John are both great. From next door in Jersey we have the Boss & Bon Jovi.

I can go on and on because I love music, but I don’t want to post an essay lol.

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

"Classic" Chicago blues, Texas blues and "modern" West Coast blues. I was a semi-professional blues guitarist at one time.

Jazz - primarily bebop and hard bop (late 1940s-1963).

    Classic rock.

Fun thread. The variety of answers is already pretty interesting.
I'm 56 and I've always enjoyed Zepplin, Floyd, Neil Young, Cranberries, Supertramp, Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band(older stuff) and my daughter introduced me to Twenty One Pilots and Cage the Elephant and now they are also favorites.

I should clarify that I'm much more into Baroque Classical and ethereal Celtic stuff nowadays than harder stuff like Rob Zombie, but the likes of J.S. Bach and Metallica are both on my playlists, is what I was getting at. More of the former than the latter.

I like this post! Coming of age in the 1960's it was rock n roll. Loved and love the Beatles, Who, Small Faces, any flight with Paul Kantner and others. Then to Delta and Chicago Blues. However, really dig the Rolling Stones. If I could only own one album its Beggars Banquet.

This days its more classical. Any of the "B" composers, Rossini, Wagner.

Also enjoy contemporary Saharan music - Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Tinariwen, and others who drive my spellchecker crazy.

I found some very good music on this post - my thanks to you all.
