We need to see if we can get an archive of that slide show.

I was thinking more like "ouch" :headbang:

No, they don't say "copy", but I took a closer look at the "albums" with such fabulous offerings as 1796 50c and they were pretty sorry. The worst of all was an 1854-D gold $1.

Even a modicum of knowledge would reveal these as counterfeits, but I'm concerned they don't say "copy". Illegal.

With today's tech it should be easy to produce some authentic looking fakes.

I suspect we are on our way to more sophisticated methods of authenication, just as the x-ray was replaced by CAT and the MRI and now a whole variety of derivative tests. The TPG's methods will use spectroscopic fingerprinting and comparison of known ( such as from the Smithsonian ) composition of gold and silver coins, 3-D tomography of coin surfaces using Scanning Electron Microscopes. Along with the Expert human's brain they will still be able to do a good job.

Of course a PCGS type slabbing might cost $500. But I want to know where to get those neat storage boxes. I want a gold and a blue lined one ;)

Many here say the same thing, in the long run, Education and experience is our best protection! So True!

It's not bad at all. I guarantee you there are people that still haven't seen them. And everybody NEEDS to see them.

I'm not at all shocked to see this and boy is this scary. I have seen some fake Rolexes that are scary, good enough to almost fool a friend of mine who deals in Rolexes.

Interesting post. It highlights the necessity to "educate thyself" and also shows the value of TPGs.

If individual education was the hobby's only defense against scheisters, then increasing quality of fakes increases the minimum knowledge to "enter" the hobby.

if I'm a slabber I make a new slab every year and detailed website which describes and pictures each coin. there might be other things to do to protect the slabs authenticity like laser burn the seq number on the inside of the slab hologaphically, each one unique. With suficated machinery they can put a holographic image of the coin on the slab....

I was looking through that album and saw a Large Cent, they had the weight down to the gram. Scary stuff indeed.

A quick Google search showed that eBay could care less (Imagine that!) and that the Postal Inspectors don't seem terribly concerned.
