Does anybody have any idea what this is? It came in a small lot of Greek AEs, most from Macedonia. I can't even tell what kind of animal it is. Or if it is Greek. Non-animal side may be wrong-side-up. It is 12 mm in diameter and weighs 1.90 grams. Thank you! Mr. Snuffleupagus: By Source, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=23699071
Thanks for that tip - I'd never heard of Mendes and looking over some images online there is a definite resemblance to the donkey/ass that figured on so many of their coins. Just started looking, but haven't found the reverse yet. Thanks again!
I am in a demographic sweet spot for Sesame Street - aged about 6 when the first season came out - instantly became a big fan. Since then I have matured and moved on to SpongeBob Squarepants.
I would have guessed kushan horse, BUT the size of your coin is not a tetradrachm and I don't know if there are smaller fractions that are similar. India, Kushan, Vima Taktu (Soter Megas), Circa 80-90 AD, Æ Tetradrachm Obv: Diademed bust right, holding sceptre; Tamgha of Soter Megas behind Rev: King on horseback right; Tamgha of Soter Megas before
Thanks, Sulla80. I was kind of thinking Kushan too - as you note, it's too small for a tet, but I wasn't sure if it might be some tiny AE "unit" of some sort. I'm not very familiar with coins from that area.
Mine looks more like a LLama... I think the Incan Empire was much larger than originally known... INDIA, Kushan Empire. Vima Takto (Soter Megas). Æ Tetradrachm, 21mm, 8.5g, 12h; c. AD 80-100. Obv.: Radiate and diademed bust right, holding scepter; tamgha behind. Rev.: BACIΛЄV BACIΛЄVΩN CΩTHP MЄΓAC; Vima Takto on horseback right, holding axe; tamgha to lower right. Reference: Senior B17.1vT
