Hello I was wondering if any of you could possibly help w/ a mis-identified Seleucid tet. I purchased in 2008. The dealer, long forgotten advertised & I purchased this coin as a Seleucus I, but David Sear I.D-ed this piece in his COA as Seleucus II Callinicus 246-226 BC Susa mint .("VF & Nearly VF Scarce") Refs.: H&L 787a, Newell 346 Plate XXVII,11 & Boehringer p. 167,20. My questions to anyone else interested & knowledgeable, are: #1 How can you tell?...and #2 Just how 'scarce/rare' is this mintage?? Any further info would be deeply appreciated & pics supplied upon request, (I'm just a lazy old fart, but finally got around to posting lousy pics) J.T. Addendum: After checking the 'Seleucid ID Site', no Susa mintage coins were listed.....(perhaps 'scarce' after all.)
Quite a find Seleucus II issued almost no silver with Heracles. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5446253
Wow, I had no idea that the Seleucids were producing Alexander’s that late. Very cool find! Here is my Tetradrachm of Seleucus II Seleucus II Callinicus, 246-226 BC Chr. AR tetradrachm inc. in northern Syria or northern Mesopotamia Vs .: head with diadem from right, back: Apollon stands with arrow on tripod from left, monogram Houghton / Lorber 724.1 on left inside; Newell, WSM 990. 17.18 g.
Greetings & Thank you Magnus & David for your input, I wish I could claim to be so prescient in buying this piece, but I purchased this coin from N***s Coins in 2008 as advertised by them: as Seleukos I 312-281 BC Susa Mint AR Tetradrachm 16.85g. When I received the Sear COA it was a nice surprise as I paid $600 & now can't help but wonder if the value has increased. If anyone has seen a recent sales price, please advise. Stay Safe, J.T.
