    LordM & Friends CoinTalk Giveaway #40

    This contest is now CLOSED. Winners were announced in Post #84 and subsequent.

    Brought to you by Bean, the Feline Tycoon

    20200530_170703.jpg

    Deadline for entries: to be announced (sometime in July)

    Hi, everybody, and welcome to the latest giveaway!

    This time there are 5 prize lots given by 3 donors.

    In other words, there will be 5 drawings and each contestant will have 5 chances to win something!

    How to enter:

    Your entry post must meet all three of these (easy) requirements to be valid.

    1. Please include the words "entry post" in your initial post to this thread - and only your first post. You may reply conversationally to this thread as many times as you like, but if you put the phrase "entry post" into more than one reply, you will disqualify yourself. Everybody gets only one entry post per contest. But that single entry post gives you a chance in all of the drawings, so you do get multiple chances when the contests feature multiple prize drawings.

    2. In addition to the words "entry post", post something else that is coin-related in some way- whatever you like. (Currency, tokens, medals, etc. are fine.) Beginners are welcome- you don't have to know anything about coins. Nor do you have to be able to post pictures. Just post something- anything- generally numismatic in nature, be it your favorite coin, a question, or a story. Whatever.

    3. To expedite the prize allotments at the end of the month, please specify your prize choices, in order of preference. You don't have to list all of the prizes if you don't want to (though that helps), but do please give us at least your first three preferences. (List your first favorite choice, second favorite, third favorite, etc., in order.) This speeds up the process at the end of the contest and helps ensure everyone has a better chance at getting a prize they like.

    The fine print:

    • There are no strings attached- no shipping charges or anything.

    • If your lucky number (the permalink number of your entry post) comes up in the drawing at the end of the month, you've won a prize. Drawings are done with the random.org True Random Number Generator.

    • To see how this works and has played out before, look at some of the current replies or see the past giveaways. (I've put an archive of those here.)

    • I will gladly ship prizes outside the USA (or reimburse donor partners for doing so), but if international shipping proves too costly, we do reserve the right to substitute prizes (such as with an electronic PayPal gift, etc).

    • If you are a minor, we're delighted to have you play, but please make sure you have your parents' permission to enter this giveaway, since if you win, we will be required to ask for your mailing address.

    Our kind donor partners for this contest were:

    @lordmarcovan (yours truly)
    @Beardigger
    @dwhiz

    So many thanks to them for their generosity!

    Have fun! :)

    Numismatic Regards,

    ~Robertson ("Rob") Shinnick, aka "Lord Marcovan"
    (and generous donor partners)

    Two World Silver coins.

    • Australia: silver shilling of George V, KM# 26, 1916-M, G+ to VG, Melbourne mint.
    • France: silver franc, 1918, "Semeuse" or "Sower" type, KM# 844.1, XF+ to AU.
    I would guesstimate the Aussie shilling as a $6-8-ish item, perhaps, and the French Sower franc at $19-20-ish (in USD).

    (Enjoy my nice glarey cellphone shots.)

    A vintage CALEMETER COIN BANK, circa 1930s-40s, and six silver dimes.

    This item is from the estate of Nancy S. Don't worry, Nancy ain't dead, but she left her house and most of her worldly goods here in Georgia and moved back home to Canada all of a sudden. (I had no idea she was Canadian, though the lack of a Georgia twang in her voice should've been a clue.) It seems my folks were assigned as "executors" of Nancy's "estate", and I ended up with some coins and stuff. This being part of that stuff.

    When I got it, the bank was full of mostly older Canadian coins, which I pillaged (i.e., sold), but here are six of the silver dimes left over for you. They are five Canadian ten-cent pieces (1942, 1949, 1957, and two 1961) and one American silver Roosevelt dime (1960-D). I will also add one of my "Lord Marcovan" custom elongated Wheat cents.

    Now, the Calemeter bank. This was a pretty cool item once (and maybe still). I gather that whenever you put a quarter in the top, the date wheel would click and advance the date forward, so that you knew you had done your part in saving for the day. Yep, a quarter a day made you a thrifty saver! That should give some idea of the age of this bank. I place it circa 1930s to 1940s, but likely not long after 1945 since there is an embossed image of a Mercury dime on the front cover.

    The bank has some condition issues. There are some traces of old cardboard stuck to and peeled away from the front cover, as well as some other general wear and tear. The key is gone but the bank is unlocked. In fact, I don't even think there is still a lock mechanism inside. (?) Though the bottom door stays closed by itself, it can be opened with a fingernail. I tried some of the dimes in one of the slots and there was a clicking sound, but the date wheel did not advance. This might be a good project for a tinkerer.

    Google search reveals several different kinds, varying in price from $7.00 up to $49.99 for one on Etsy. That one too has condition problems but it does have the key, which, as I suspected, was a rather basic and cheap looking thing anyway.

    • Front cover: CALEMETER COIN BANK (embossed image of Mercury dime) / A COIN A DAY KEEPS IT UP-TO-DATE (day/date mechanism window) / © & PAT BY ZELL PRODS. CO. N.Y.
    • Top: A QUARTER A DAY (quarter-width slot) KEEPS IT UP TO DATE
    • Right "page end" side: FOR VARIOUS (half-dollar width slot) COINS, (small round hole) PAPER MONEY
    • Bottom: PATENTED & PATS. PEND (keyhole) TO OPEN
    • Spine of "book": THE INSURANCE / CO. ASSUMES NO / RESPONSIBILITY / FOR THE CONTENTS / OR DISPOSITION / OF THIS BANK
    • Back cover: TO SET, TURN (small hole to reset the date wheel somehow)
    More craptastic cellphone shots for you, but hey- a longish animated GIF, too!

    So after some time away from actively collecting I'm now rekindling my hobby. I've got a new domain name for my website, put it online and I'm working on my double's list to start trading again.
    As I changed countries, I had to get rid of some extra "ballast" to transport my collection, like binders and so on. This means I'm also working on reorganising everything. Man it's a lot of work! :)

    I plan to add a blog section to my website and post some stories and photos of this journey.

    First, thank you to all the donors who provide us with these fun contests! My coin collection has grown substantially since the last contest started, so I can share some higher quality coins now.

    Today, I am going to share two of my favorite coins. I keep them next to each other in my coin binder, and share them as a package deal for obvious reasons. I have at least one coin that is much larger, more scarce and more valuable than these, but I have a very big affinity for Marcus Aurelius (as you can tell from my profile picture and I already shared that other coin on CT).

    Here are two denarius that I recently acquired, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
