Tarantulas come out of their “dens”, mostly at night, during the hot summer months here in southern Arizona.

I love Roman antiquities, and in today's live Timeline auction I won something I wasn't expecting to win - in fact, I didn't really want to win, but that's what I get for having my computer mouse hovering over the "bid" button instead of paying attention. I wasn't after this at all, but one twitch of my mouse finger and it was mine.

It's nothing unusual - the standard bronze patera handle with a ram's head, from the 1st to 2nd century AD. Before I put it on ebay, if anyone wants it for a song it's yours. I can get better pictures of it once I receive it.

I don't think I've posted this before, so here goes: this fossil fish (Vinctifer Comptoni) is from the Santana formation of northeastern Brazil, and is a little over 22 inches long. Curled up on itself as the fish is, the plate is only 11-1/2" long, so it's much easier to display without being too overbearing. It's extremely 3D which makes it so interesting to me. Love target shooting and have several rifles and pistols, and occasionally like to break a few clay pigeons as well. Love sim flying, and driving, and have recently gotten back into electronics to build switch panels and such (raspberry pi, arduino).
Did the RC thing for several years, but now have a few airplanes hanging on the ceiling mostly collecting dust. Since I like to shoot a lot, I reload for everything I shoot, with the exception of Russian 7.62x39 and 7.62X54R. I also picked up a nice CNC router last year and have it running from a raspberry pi 4. The design work is carried out on my PC and laptop on Vetric's VCarve Pro software. Have plans once I retire to build a Lotus 7 clone (Locost).

Always loved astronomy, and had a nice telescope when I was young. Have some property in upstate Nevada that I'm hoping to use at some point that should be far enough away from light pollution to see far out into the stars.

Me too, and me too. Every night (usually) about 10, I take a walk and look at the stars and planes. I’m starting to gradually see more planes.

I love the outdoors and I love guns!

However, living in the UK I cannot own the real thing so I don't bother with shooting clubs and shooting ranges here as they are rare, expensive and the legislation is cumbersome. Luckily, air-soft is legal and there are plenty of clubs and sites around to go and play pew-pew with other consenting adults.

Basically it is like paint-ball, but with more realistic guns (replicas of real models) that are either electric or gas operated and fire plastic pellets. The range is about 40 to 60 meters, and they are pretty accurate, so that allows for realistic war-games and scenarios in nice woodland settings.

Here is one of my toys:

    airsft_g.jpg

It is an air-soft replica of the CZ BREN 805 from the Czech Republic. It can be an expensive hobby as you can spend a lot of money in upgrading the internal mechanism plus adding stuff like bipods, scopes, mock suppressors, etc. A fun difference from the paint-ball ones is that they are full-automatic.

Does it hurt when you get hit by one of these? Yes on naked skin or thin clothing like t-shirts. At close range you may even bleed. Eye-pro is compulsory and mouth protection is a good idea unless you have a very good dental plan.

Big fun! I enjoy Target shooting with my various caliber pistols (.22 through .50 AE), and Rifles various cals. My wife and I have built AR15’s, and I usually trick out my pistols and rifles. I am building an AR30, sniper style, but really taking my time to find the right barrel. I was a bit frustrated expatting to the UK several years ago, as I had to put all my firearms in storage.

I have a very good buddy, who is an ex-cop in Hong Kong. He usually takes me air-soft shooting when I visit. Fun, but he has the same frustration about not being able to shoot guns, even being an ex-cop. He has fun when he comes over here to the States.

My favorite pistols are the Glocks... incredibly well engineered and designed, and so simple to field strip, trick out, and to use.

    Posted this earlier...

Ruger Super RedHawk 44Mag... added Hogue Grip, nice little sight. 9” barrel, that really flames and kicks when I use full-saami Buffalo Bore cartridges. I usually get a lot of lookers when I unload this at the range.

Saiga, Ishmash Factory AK47, that I further tricked out with rails, sights, other accoutrements, etc. This a gem to shoot. I shoot better with the front grip folded flat

Here is my newest. A Wilson Combat EDC X9
    Wilson Combat EDC X9.jpg
Handguns are my favorite. With the 45ACP and 45 Colt at the top. Generally, Colts and Rugers but scatterings of Kimbers, ParaOrdinace, and S&W sprinkled in. I've used them to hunt both in the US and Africa. When I was on the Guard Team I was shooting 3000 rds a week. I love to reload and do so for everything from my 22 Chucker up thru my 475 Linebaugh custom stainless and 500 NE Double Rifle. About 25 calibers in all. I also cast for many calibers and have a huge hydraulic swage press to make jacketed bullets. One of my specialty 45 Colt bullets will hit a pop can 5 out of 6 times at 100 yds with my Ruger Vaquero and standard pinch sights.

Here is a target I shot with my S&W 45 Colt Mountain Gun that was every day carry when at my cabin. Five shots at 15 yards using open sights:

Yeah, .45 is my caliber of choice in a handgun. Just feels right.
