Im confused... Ill try to get a close up ASAP.... Thanks David L. :desk:
#1: Welcome. #2: Your posting is very confusing; #3: If you purchased it from Stacks, then there is a VERY high percentage chance that it is real.
:headbang:Ill Post a picture of it, But does anyone know how much this thing could b worth? Or if their is a picture of the coin somewhere online. THE SILVER ONE... ANYONE???
As you read in the URL you listed, it is not an official mint product. It is mentioned in Judd's book " U. S. Pattern, Experimental and Trial Pieces", in Appendix "C" as by Merriam (1866). The reverse was a die made in the mint for a pattern 3 cent piece of 1867. The gold one was valued as a Three Dollar piece. A Silver one is mentioned, with the reverse the same , BUT the Obverse has only the bust and not any Motto (Judd) No values indicated. If yours has the Motto, I would be concerned. Welcome to the Forum! Jim
Perchance is this yours? 1866 Merriam Private $3 pattern. MS-60. Ex – American Numismatic Rarities, LLC’s “The Classics Sale,” July 25, 2003 , Lot 1061, "Judd-Appendix C, Pollock-5080, Rarity-7+", illustrated, sold for $4,140.00 Jim
Here is that lot with photos: http://www.stacks.com/lotdetail.aspx?lsid=0000000001&asid=&lrid=AMBALT1061 Jim
My advice is to stop wasting time here . Since it is such an advaced piece & no pictures or auction record will be found you should not offer a reward to us but take that money ($100) or so I figure & get it certified by NGC using their express service. Then you will know for sure. Since you cant recall what you paid for it whats another $100 or so gonna do ? At least in a week you will be certain. P.S. glad to hear that you just happened upon this coin again that has been your collection for the past 15 years & now your inquiring about it. Its always nice to see such a rare piece reappear. I dont mean that you should not post here - I was just stating you should hop on the good foot & get that coin certified ASAP. Good Luck-
Actually in Judd's Pattern Book it says the 1866 Obverse ALL HAVE THE MOTTO, Its the 1868 that doesnt have a motto on any of the varieties of metal. Also their is not an 1868 that is silver, only an 1866 silver. It says ALL 1866 HAVE MOTTO's, And once i find my camera i will put up pictures, is there anyway for me to find out if it is silver or another metal? would it be shiny or dull? Also, DUDE is right i will just send it to PCGS, but for now im trying to figure it out. Mine is EXACTLY like the gold one only its silver colored... So what the hell am i supposed to think? SOMEONE with anymore info???????? Thanks to everyone....
Yes, I apologize, you are correct it does say 1868. My eyesight again That is the only 1866 Merriam that Stack's has in their archive of auctions, so I don't know about the silver. Good Luck. Jim
I would suspect that what you have is probably a plated copper piece. The problem is the weight. You say it's the size of a nickel and weighs 4.8 grams while a nickel weighs 5 grams. The problem is a silver piece that size would weigh 5.66 grams if pure silver and 5.58 grams if .900 fine silver. For a plated copper piece or a nickel alloy though the weight would be right. Of course that would still be new because the known copper pieces are plain edged and there is no nickel alloy piece listed.
Its a dull silver it doesnt look like silver to me, but i may be wrong... Is there anyway to tell? Also, it looks to me like the pictures are the EXACT SAME STRIKE, i mean EVERY LITTLE DETAIL IS EXACT, EXACT SPACING, EXACT IN EVERYWAY.... BUT HERES WHATS KILLING ME, I CANNOT FIND ANY HISTORY AT ALL OF ANY FAKES OR COUNTERIETS EVER EVEN PHOTOGRAPHED, LET ALONE RECORDED. YOU WOULD THINK PEOPLE WOULD HAVE THESE FAKES AND BE ASKING ABOUT THEM IF THERE WE FAKES AT ALL, DONT YOU THINK. if it is a silver JC1866-3 it is ultra rare, they have ONE in the smithsonian, i think ill go look at theirs the decide....lol
Condor? why would someone nickel plate a copper piece? Also their is not an aluminum, nickel, or putter version of this coin.... But it doesnt look like silver??? And their are no fakes reported anywhere...
$incere, A photo of the coin would be helpful. You just say it is exactly like the one shown as to devices only silver like color, and What do you mean by this? the actual reeding on the edge of the coin or the denticles on the back of the coin? I can't see any flattening on the right hand side of the reeding of the illustrated coin. So I am confused also, a photo would help a lot. Jim
As you can see The Two Lines On The Right Are EXACTLY WHERE MY COIN HAS SHORT LINES EXACTLE LIKE YOU SEE IN NUMBER TWO 2. CIRCLE.... If you look at 7 the bars are longer and this is exactly what mine has... The Gap Touches On The First Two Bars And Theres A Small Gap In Between The Third, Mine Also Has This CIRCLE 5 (FIVE) LASLY the smallest things are the same as seen in Circle 6. EVERYTHING IS EXACT ON FRONT ALSO, THE SMALLEST IMPERFECTION
What else would you think you would find on a fake? The best fakes are copied piece by piece from a real coin. If every detail is correct...that could mean its fake. Find a local dealer and take it to him and let him check it out, also get him to get a weight as well. Speedy
Since you are in Kansas City, take it to Americana Collectibles. My friend Lee would be happy to check it out for you and possibly help you in getting it graded by a TPG.
Thanks alot guys, it is most likely a fake then, because it feels like aluminum, or putter or something. If its fake though its an INCREDIBLE FAKE, also, wouldnt there be 1 single site, or forum, talking about a fake one of these. I cant find it anywhere on the net.... But like i said its EXACT to the picture, so maybey its a fake, is it possible its one thats another alloy that hasnt even been found? Because i got this from my fathers collection, and there were 6 other patterns in the same page of the book that all checked out.... Can i get the address of that place, or number??? Thank you to everybody.
Probably shouldn't do this since it might get your hopes up. But, see this coin - you won't find it any book. But it is 100% genuine. It is an off metal strike, they exist. I used to have 2 of them in fact. The original coin, the one known, was minted in gold, these were in silver.
