Hi. New to the site, and trying to ID some coins found in my great grandfather's possessions. My dad and I were unable to locate this online, though it looks similar to some Egyptian Piastres. Many of the other coins were mid to late 19th c. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 20191231_170506.jpg 20191231_170533.jpg

It is an 1852 5, 10, or 20 Kurus from the Ottoman Empire.

    What size is it?

The tughra on the obverse is a dead giveaway for old Ottoman/Turkish coins and stamps. It's the monogram of the reigning Sultan.

I'm trying to learn how to read Arabic coins, so please let me know if I've done anything wrong while trying to follow along.

The bottom date on the reverse reads ١٢٥٥ or 1255 Hijri, which corresponds to 1839 Gregorian or the beginning of Abdul Mejid's reign. The reign year on the obverse, below the tughra reads ١٤, or 14, so the full date is 1255 + 14 = 1269, which corresponds to both 1852 and 1853 Gregorian (depending on the lunar month). The Gregorian year changes to 1853 in the 4th lunar month or Rabi Al-Thani. Does that mean that Gregorian dates correspond to the beginning of the Hijri year for translation? So this one would be 1852 and not 1853 for that reason? Or is there another reason?
