Well, it might be worth $5.08 or it might be worth $50,000.00+, depending on whether it's an S-mint with a hammer mark or a 7 tail feather example with the reverse of 1879. My luck in finding them usually runs more along the lines of S-mint examples in VG- VF. You may want to invest $10.00 in a copy of the red book. It's fascinating reading as well as a definitive reference book.
Posting more info would be helpful. Is it a Morgan dollar? A Trade dollar? Which mintmark, if any? Can you post a photo? The reverse is of particular importance with this year.
It's a Morgan Hommie , I also have a 1878-S ...in VF condition I think...I need to get better grading abilities lol...but looks real good. Ivan
Well as others have posted, there are a four different varieties of the 1878 dollar. Not including the coins minted at San Francisco or Carson City. If you do not know how to identify your coin, it would be wise to have it examined by a dealer or seasoned collector.
Worthless! Even if the hand of God himself had made it, all coins are garbage according the the stamp collectors amongst these pages.
