Purchased this Mexican 8 reale this weekend at my local monthy coin auction. The dealer assured me that it was genuine but are there any markers that anyone can see that can verify this? I was thinking about sending it in to a TPG to have it authenticated. Thoughts and comments please.

I see a few things that make me think it may be counterfeit, specifically raised lumps in several places. Obverse - on the rim below the dot between the date & CAROLUS, the field between the forehead and the D of DEI. Reverse - the field between the Crown & the M, the field between the dot and denticles at 8:00, around several letters of HISPAN.

I can't say definitively the coin is counterfeit but I do not think it is genuine. Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Yes there are some things that bother me. Get it weighed and report back.

Nice coin! Whether or not it's genuine or not, I don't know. I see it's a Mexico City mintmark, and they were cranked out with little regard for quality most years, with rusty dies and substandard equipment. The only thing that bothers me is the denticles between 4 and 6 o'clock. They look kind of off for some reason.
