Hi. I am working on a set of V nickels, and I wanted opinions on this key date. It is not graded, but looks better (to me) than most of the G-4s I've seen graded by PCGS and NGC. I was looking for opinions on authenticity as well as any issues. thanks.
The coin looks genuine, but the date may be altered. The 5 doesn't look quite right to me, but it's close. As far as technical grade, in my opinion, a Liberty nickel should have full obverse and reverse rims to be G-4. I would expect your coin to bring full G-4 money, though, given the strength of the obverse.
Good 4 I think that the coin is genuine & the date looks OK. It is just very worn. Anyone that wants to complete a set in G/VG will need this coin. My opinion is it should bring Good 4 money anywhere. What is the current price of a Good 4? Very best regards, collect89
1. Nice coin no matter what. Looks like honest wear all the way. 2. Obverse is G-4. Reverse is weaker, but I think still good enough to keep the G-4 grade.
I believe if you are really strict with the ANA guidelines (and I don't have the book with me) wear that bad on the reverse (where the rim becomes indistinguishable) drops the grade to AG-3. I agree that the obverse is a G-4 but the reverse drops the coin to AG-3 in my opinion. That being said, TPGs don't use those same standards and I have seen coins like this and even a little worse graded G-4. So, I'd say the coin market grades at a G-4 but if your really techinical I'd t think it would be an AG-3. But, it's a very nice coin either way. :thumb:
interesting responses. The line is really fuzzy between AG-3 and G-4 with these coins. Here is an example of two 1885 NGC graded 1885 nickels. One is graded G-4, and the other is graded AG-3. Which one would you say is graded which and why? Consequently, the asking price for the AG-3 is almost $300 less because of the slab but I see very little difference between these two coins. This may also be an instance of "gradeflation" as another thread discussed.
Those pics are really hard to make out so I'll do my best. I'd say the bottom coin is graded AG-3. There is less rim on the reverse than on the other coin visible and the detail on the obverse is slightly more warn. It looks like there is almost a tiny bit of "Liberty" visible on the obverse of the first coin and none on the second. That being said, I'd say the top coin is also technically an AG-3 because of the rim on the reverse.
The top one must be the G-4 , it seems to have a lot more design than the bottom one . Goes to show how misleading our grading terms must sound to outsiders , where Good actually means it's in pretty bad shape . rzage
It's no more misleading than Real Estate. Below are some terms Realtors often use to describe a property and their translations: cozy - incredibly small fixer-upper - should be condemned and bulldozed charming - extremely odd or inconvenient (e.g., having a toilet in the kitchen or a bedroom that requires walking through another bedroom to enter or exit) ocean view - you can see a sliver of the ocean from the roof through a powerful telescope bohemian - built by hippies (aka, fire trap) original - never been updated (great if you like avocado green appliances and countertops) retro - see "original" rustic - think 100-year-old mountain cabin handyman special - see "fixer-upper" convenient to freeway - you'll need earplugs if you want to sleep with the traffic noise AND don't let the kids play in the backyard unless you install crash barriers
oh, you guys are too good. Anyways, out of the three coins I posted, which one would you choose to own?
I'd take the second one. I feel it has the most detail visible and is the most attractive in my opinion.
I can't with good conscience give a G4 to a coin that has unreadable letters and rims that intersect the field. Here is where 'market grading' rears it's ugly head again.
Here is another 85 that I am somewhat considering. It has some "spots", though it is in a problem free ICG holder. What would you grade it, and what do you think ICG gave it? "no cheating"
Are those dark spots on the reverse on the coin or the holder? If they are on the coin...I don't know what they are but they are an eyesore and I would pass on the coin. Other than that, I think the coin looks like a solid G-4 to me.
I give the first coin a AG4 like captin kirk says the reverse rim is runnig into the field that;s why this coin don't make a G4. Jazzcoins joe
johnny That last one is the least attractive, altho it is a definite G-4. The stains on the reverse have to lower the grade, in my eye. Go with door #1.
