I know I have probably posted this one before. Nice coin that I was given many years ago. This USB shot does not capture the beautiful toning.

    Here is an 1867 1 lira from the Papal State. On the 1996 25 euro pattern, all I know is I bought it from a fellow I know in England for 12 quid and there is a note saying "KrauseX#M31". 1867 IT-PS 1 L obv.JPG 1867 IT-PS 1 L rev.JPG

Yes, indeed! I think you have it right. I wonder why that other one that I found identified it as St. Peter. Very interesting . . .

It is odd. The coin is Ascoli listed in the Standard Catalog as KM5 with Saint Peter but the legend references The Madonna. The Saint Peter image and legend are very different for the series. A hunch is that The Standard Catalog made a mistake in their listing by stating Saint Peter as the image. There is no image of the reverse in my edition. Could be that whoever put up the coin on Numista copied the mistake from The Standard Catalog. If have found a bunch of errors like this in Numista. And I think the halo is to the ... right.

Wow, Muzyck! I was taking a cursory look at my SCWC, 7th edition, in the Italian states; how very complicated. In any case, I totally agree - Madonna, not St. Peter.

    I'm moving us on with 1867 - to Prussia! A one-half silver groschen - or one-sixtieth thaler.

Very interrenching patina on that one. Here is a 1757 6 pence with some added scratched on words on the reverse. 1757 GB 6 p obv.JPG 1757 GB 6 p rev.JPG

My oldest Kingdom of England (or United Kingdom of Great Britain - or simply Great Britain). I vaguely recall posting here before. Sorry.

A penny from 1285 graced with the visage of Edward I; Canterbury mint (Spink 1419).
