Just got in the mail today. :) The reverse is weakly struck obviously, but I am pleased overall. It is a big upgrade to the G-6 one that I replaced it with. Not an incredible bargain this time, but still a decent price. What do you guys think?

actually my "weakly struck" statement may been inaccurate about the reverse. Likely from a worn die?

XF-40, maybe a 45. Nice coin man. :thumb:

It may get a 40 from wear, but it is probably worth only 12/15 money because of the strike and what looks like corrosion to me.

Are you talking about what is under Liberty on the obverse?

I would give it an VF35 lots of wear on the obverse in the wheat stalks

Yeah, there is a spot under liberty. Looks more like PVC than verdigris. I may consider an acetone dip.

If you suspect PVC, dip it. The longer it is on, the more damage it does. However, it does not look like PVC to me.

I'd go with a 40 maybe 45... but like rlm said the spot on the obverse bothers me

This looks like some reverses my variety friend calls "Lincoln's ghost" where the outline of the obverse is visible, maybe damaged dies gives the weak area near the "O" in ONE.

    Jim,

You are referring to "Indirect Design Transfer" where Lincoln's image is transferred to the Reverse Die due to the Dies striking thousands of planchets! Since this is evidence of severely fatigued Dies, some details on the Reverse are effected and weak or mushy.

The spot is mostly black, with just a hint of dark green. It's not aqua colored like vertigris, and it appears to only be on the surface of the coin.

I agree about the reverse die. It's seen better days, lol.

Thanks Frank! Now I know the name. And a reason for a weak reverse.

Here's what I'd do about that spot:

I've done this before, and the couple of coins I've done it to have come out fine, lol. Take a toothpick, and lightly scrape away at the gunk. If you do it right, you shouldn't leave any noticable marks, where it shouldn't do any harm to the coin. I've done this before, (about 2 or 3 times) and they all have been succesful. But, that is if the stuff hasn't eaten away at the coin yet. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do! :thumb:

I was able to get all of the green off of the coin as far as I can tell under a 30x loupe. However, there is still some black grime that used to surround the green area. Am I safe now, or is the black dangerous too?

this seems to be a week strike on the reverse,a coin like this will sometimes get a split grade which it looks like it to me by analizing the coin a litl e more,-------------------------------------------------- grade XF40/Vf35 which means the obverse would get the grade of XF40 and the reverse would get a grade of VF35, but i think the grading companys go for the lower grade unfortunitly .
