I will be more than happy to proclaim the coin ugly. :)

Here is the reason my dealer gave me about the eagles coins being considered bullion: They are all high grade and the mintages will not disappear over the years thru use. They will always be readily available and there will just not be a numismatic value attached to them. The value of these coins will always be attached to the bullion value with maybe a small premium based off demand. Plus not much history will be associated with them. Again these are just opinions

I think I got everything - now the common date St. Gaudens are about the same. Very small premiums over gold content. They will never be in circulation and they probably will never be recalled to be melted. It is just a matter of opinion. I would rather take the $1000(give or take) and buy a nice 1807 Capped bust half. :)

I agree, but I didn't want to be the first to say it. I threw the catalog away. It's a gimmick.

I would guess that it has to be thick since it is Ultra hight relief. The fields will likely be very deep near the devices so the thickness will be much less there.

Still wonder if it will be offered in both proof and uncirculated? Is there a law that says a coin must be released both ways? Of course the silver halves, quarters and dimes aren't released uncirculated but it's not a different design. If both ways I will go with the uncirculated though the proof will likely look (subjectively) better for this type and design.

I wonder if it is really as thick as it looks in those diagrams or if they are just trying to show the affect of the high relief. I have never seen one of the originals in person, but I doubt they are very thick. I'd be interested to actually see one of these new Double Eagles in hand. Either way, I want one. :D

  8. I think the coin looks completely awesome (my mint catalog just arrived today!). Alas, I won't be able to afford one.
