I think I have a improper alloy mix nickel.

AGREED!! I am new to this site and there are a few individuals that do not know how to be polite, they puff themselves up by running others down.
I was a member of a very large collectors club in NC and we had one individual that CONSTANTLY was so disruptive with his criticisms he was less than politely ask to leave by the entire membership. Being new to this site is there a moderator that watches for instances of rudeness/verbal abuse. We ALL had to start somewhere and we ALL had to have assistance along the way. To Reality 1000, continue the search, and take with a VERY SMALL grain of salt what some say.

Rude posts get reported by the members. I think the moderators do a pretty good job on here. They aren’t paid positions

While some members might be blunt, they still give good opinions that are usually correct and verified by other knowledgable members. How you read and take a post is your point of view. If you feel slighted or take it as rude, I suggest you re-read all of the posts and try to view them for the best answer, not the politest one.

I think your coin looks like it has been heated to excessive temperature and then air cooled. It has some blue and purplish toning in areas. Heating can also change a U.S. nickel coin to a predominantly copper color.
Your coin does not look like any of the MD coins that were posted.

I would appreciate knowing that a coin could potentially be different types of errors.
Any coin has factors that one must weigh in making choices regarding grading, any errors, and values. Deductions would lead me to discover possibilities, increase my knowledge, and the next coin could be one of those options even when the subject coin is not. That is how I think most of us learn. Some would like us to think that only "we" (whomever we is) are allowed to comment but, thank goodness, the fact is we can all post comments (at least for now) or you wouldn't be reading this right now. I replied to coinman2 because no one else had and I explained others would probably comment it wasn't that big a deal but some evidently want it to be.
I never said it all ends with what I said but even the ones that seem to think they know it all stand corrected. That says it all. Enjoy the remainder of the day.

Thanks and you are exactly right. Plus, I have a feeling some new members probably leave quickly when they find that there are some that are probably allowed to operate with negative attitudes unimpeded. Too, I see there are little sub-groups that support another's negative manners as they are familiar with them and they probably do the same for them. We have some comments here that it's all just one's opinion if you feel slighted (even in cases when it's very obvious that you were lol) and it doesn't matter if they give the best answer. So you have to run a gauntlet to post or get an answer lol? That's not good. I understand, sometimes people are just transferring whatever personal feelings or issues they have to their online persona but they should try being considerate. It shouldn't be that complicated, post your opinion without being too judgemental and move on. Politeness should never be at a premium. Enjoy your day friend. Ooh-Rah

It's your basic normal everyday Nickel that has been subjected to environmental damage. The weight stated is within tolerance.

Same old thing. Someone new gets an answer they don't like and they start calling others rude. Next another new member that thinks they are gods gift to the site jumps in with false information just blowing smoke. It's not hard to spot those that don't know what they are talking about.

It's a pattern to have overly sensitive people like you on here, giving out incorrect data and getting offended at being corrected.

While your explanation of an improperly annealed planchet is correct, the OPs coin suffered environmental damage. Improperly annealed planchets will have a normal, as struck appearance along the reeding or edge. The edge color of this coin is the same as the other surfaces indicating it suffered environmental damage.

Coins that have been buried or found on the ground are relatively common as evidenced by the frequent questions from new collectors on CT. Improper annealing is not a common error. An entire process step would have to be set up incorrectly. When you consider process checks and quality inspection sampling done in manufacturing processes, it would be very unusual for a batch/lot of discolored planchets to escape unnoticed.

For what it's worth, many members feel it's important to provide accurate information to new collectors. I believe that's the reason why your answer was roasted. You don't want to give a new collector the impression that they found something valuable, when the just have a damaged coin. Nothing wrong with offering an opinion, but if you're not positive, that should be clarified in your post.

    Hope that helps

Wait until you've been here for 10 years, have shown up every day and have had to answer the same questions a thousand times knowing that the answer can be found readily with the CT search function and a little bit of reading.

People come here with a thin skin, call us rude when we give them a "ho hum" one or two word answer or resent it when someone goes into great detail by saying something like, "What do you think I am? Stupid?" They believe the BS that is shoveled around on BoobTube and refuse to accept the responses from knowledgeable members who, collectively, have hundreds of years of experience.

No! The mods don't play favorites and look the other way just because someone has been around a long time. I don't want to tell you how many times I have been cited just because I lost my cool with some jerk who had it coming. Don't give me that crap about cliques. Wait until you've posted 40,000 times, have had newcomers insult you and you've continued to stick around despite it all. ~ Chris

It was clarified through PROBABLY. And I said I knew a little about but left it for deferral and was new here. I think we keep missing the big picture here and I don't understand why we are still here. There really is no need for "roasting." I can't say that any plainer unless I take out the crayons. We aren't in grade school here or are "we?" If someone says you surely have a _____ and is speaking authoritatively and says no need to wait another opinion then they may deserve to be redirected but even then there is a way without dissecting every sentence and word needlessly with multiple posts. So easy to do by saying something like "actually this coin IMO (in my opinion) is______ and I collect them etc." How hard would that be to do?

Yes exactly. Best attitude both here and in life in general. I hope there are MANY that have your type attitude here. I hope but don't know.

No one is trying to insult anyone. I hope no one thinks that. I don't have a thin skin and I certainly wouldn't be replying to some of these posts if I did have one lol. No disrespect but your post is more complex than just the thread here. If it's "frustrating to answer the same question a thousand times" for the past "10 years" and "show up everyday," I admire you for that, but, why don't you take a break and let another "expert" answer. It seems there is no shortage of "experts" here. If you take it upon yourself to answer maybe just post a link to a previous answer? It seems it shouldn't be a chore but enjoyable. Also, it seems it would be more strictly a reference site though if we only looked for previous posts though. That's why it's called "CoinTalk" and not "Expert Answers to Lookup." All things are not constant with coins. If you feel we should have to "wait" til we have been here "10 years" to post anything maybe you should suggest changing it to a "view only" forum for members for a number of years. I don't know it would last that long though. No one in this thread has refused to accept anyone's response that I can tell. It's just the way some have responded as you mention yourself when you have given advice and they had responded with a wisecrack. There is a best way to give advice and accept it. Neither needs an air of arrogance. How did the "knowledgeable members" get knowledgeable? Again, I do admire that you have invested so much time and effort here. I'd like to say thanks for those that may not appreciate that fact as I do. You know one big negative with being online is I'd guess many of us would likely hit it off IF we interacted at shows or something and we aren't afforded that opportunity here. Thanks

The only "air of arrogance" I see here seems to hang around you. People can joke, or get tired of answering the same questions, but you don't have to get snarky. Tone it down a bit, we would like to like you and you seem knowledgeable, but give it a little rest. Consider, you aren't even the original poster (OP).
