I was looking for a coin for my birthday, but dealers just don’t have a lot of inventory to sell. Also, I am looking for credible dealers online as I am a little paranoid of buying coins without seeing them live. I know about the world we live in, and I am willing to give it a try, but not make it a habit. any experiences from you out there?
Find some eBay dealers you like that fit in with what your investing in. Good pics, return policy, and great feedback a must.
True, but I just dont have warm fuzzies with many eBay dealers and I don’t want to get addicted on it. You can get some but not complete idea on what coins go for on eBay.
Have you check coin talk for sale board!? I just picked I just picked up two rolls of franklin for a good deal. I was always afraid of eBay too but in the last 4 months I pulled the trigger on one and the coin was exactly what I bought and I stuck with that buyer. Check out Dave collectible coins he is honest and has been around a long time...
I purchase coins from a couple of on line dealers. I live in an area where the closest coin store is 68 miles away. Buying on line has been my primary source of new material. I generally make a small purchase when I find a new dealer. If the small purchase arrives and is good, I make larger purchases. I almost never buy off of e-bay.
I don't use eBay but I have found a few online dealers that are honest and reputable so I buy from them as well as my LCS.
Try this website: https://www.collectorscorner.com/coins/ It pulls from the inventories of many reputable dealers, so you can see what many of them have instead of going to each individual website. I use it all the time, and have been introduced to some great dealers I didn't know about.
That’s what I was thinking. I know we have some first class dealers here on CT. But not knowing what the interest is, it’s hard to offer any direction.
Well I will say I learned what to watch out for by buying on Ebay. I didn't spend a lot but got a couple couple hundred dollar lessons. Taught me a lot and has saved me more than I spent on those purchases. I stick with slabbed only for the most part now. Unless I am buying a specific circulated coin for its toning, look, or patina. There are nice deals but you really have to watch. And yea don't think that gem coin is sitting there outside of a nice slab. It probably isn't. The only thing nice about the price is for the seller. Aside from that if you find no reserve auctions some slabs go way cheap while others get stupid high.

Doug.... I am confused and admittedly, I am a bit slow on the uptake sometimes. I just re-read the rule book. Where does that question cross the line?
It's pretty simple Randy. The rules state that offers to buy, sell or trade are NOT allowed in the regular forum sections. Now the OP has already stated that he is looking to buy a coin, so if he told everybody what coin he wanted to buy - how could that be interpreted as being anything BUT an offer to buy ? Ya see, members can ask the other members what dealers are good dealers all day long and not break the rules. Members can recommend any dealer or any website to all other members all day long and not break the rules. In fact I even strongly encourage ALL members to make recommendations about good dealers ! BUT - the moment a member says I'm looking to buy/sell/trade this specific coin/s - he just broke the rules. The moment a member says I'm will to pay/take $xx.xx for a coin - he just broke the rules. What I'm trying to point out is that we allow threads and discussions about buy, sell, trade methods and even locations. But it's a fine line ya have to walk to stay withing the rules. The moment you mention any specifics about what coin/s, or prices - you just broke the rules.
