As most of my CT pals know, I am doing my best to collect as many types of Macedonian shield coins as within means, that a man can. When I came across this rarity, I'd never seen its type. And even now cannot find one more beautiful than this. I was a wolf on the prowl. I bid, was looking good and then tragedy struck, I was sniped at the last second But wait, there's more. Or I wouldn't have made a freaking thread about it I was commiserating with a fellow CTer about coins we'd missed out on (funny enough, I did that earlier tonight) and posted this coin and how sad I was for missing out on it. Even our dear pal @TIF had said how good it would look in my collection... I lied. I lied to your faces. Well, at least your screen. And screens see our faces more than many of our families do. Time to come clean. I was just not used to the auction houses site and the ending bid appeared higher than mine! A few days later I received the bill, paid it and then... nothing. It seemed lost in the doldrums... and then arrived! I must say, she looks even more dazzling in hand. Truly striking And I'm very proud to say she's part of my MSC collection Pseudo-autonomous issue, 1st century AD. (Bronze, 17 mm, 4.97 g), Beroia. Macedonian shield. Rev. Automatic like for the Nike reverse I can't give a second one for the story but know that I would if I could. Congrats!
Congrats on the score! I'm glad it didn't get away... it's a fine addition to your Macedonian shield collection. You reminded me that I have a Macedonian shield coin I won about two months ago that will not reach me for awhile yet. These are not my pics, but here it is, looking quite different in the pics of two different auction houses. I'm curious to see what it'll actually look like once I get it. LYDIA, Philadelphia AE15. 3.76g, 15mm. LYDIA, Philadelphia, 2nd - 1st centuries BC. SNG Copenhagen 345. O: Macedonian shield with star on boss. Big congrats, @Ryro ! VERY cool looking shield coin, really nice. It is ALWAYS fun to find a nice coin that fits well into your collection. Well, since you are posting Koinon of Macedon, maybe your shield can protect poor Eeyore from getting hurt? Long past the heady glory years of Philip II and Alexander III !!! I assume you are aware of the German book published in 1998 by the Deutsches Archaeologisches Institut in Athens: Der makedonische Schild by Katerini Liampi. Plates 23 through 32 are photos of coins!
Man, @ab initio , I am a big fan of your FROG avatar... Actually, this was a small battle to get... LUCERIA Anonymous, ca. 217-212 BC, AE uncia (7.36g). As a matter of fact, there is a theory that all frogs are forgeries except the one in the British Museum.
Great call out right there! Have it, LOVE it, translated it into English and would be honored to get to meet and chat with Liampi! She is 1 of the 2 or 3 main sources for any collector of MSCs (or anonymous Macedonian coins, as she calls them).
