Sorry I am new to here. I posted these before but didn't do it properly. They are four consecutive serial number 1935 Silver Certificates in really great shape. Never been folded that I can tell. My question is: If they are consecutive, why does the bottom one look so strange, like very offset. Also the numbers on the back are different. Can someone please tell me whats going on here? I received these as change from a grocery store 30+ years ago. I recognized them as soon as she gave them to me and I was going to ask here for change for a five thinking there might be more. Didn't have a five though. Any help will be appreciated. Just wanting to know the difference. Value? I will pass them to my grand children! Thanks!
This was discussed on a thread here not too long ago. Printing wasn't an exact science in those days, so sometimes certain layers could print off center or skewed, such as the off center "Washington D.C." on the bottom bill. Apparently, it's normal to a certain degree. Others can fill in more details.
Consecutive numbers do not come from a single sheet, which may be what you're imagining. And you'd be right, a single sheet with one note shifted to the left would be impossible. But the numbering is done such that a stack of notes can be cut and bundled together yielding a set of consecutive numbers. So that one that was shifted a bit came from a different sheet, and all the notes on that sheet were shifted a bit.
Back in the day of 12 subject sheets, consecutive serial numbers were printed on sheets. The numbers on the back are back plate numbers and they are not typically arranged in any order. Photo courtesy of Heritage archives. This is not my sheet.
Well call me baffled! Steve to you know if the 1935 banknotes released came in sequential order in bundles? If not, it would be a bit of a feat to have come up with these four sequential notes.
The different plate numbers on the face and back tells you the bottom note was not printed on the same sheet as the others. The plate numbers on the top three are the same and they were on the same sheet.
Thank you. The seal and serial numbers are positioned properly on the bottom note. The rest is shifted?
