What causes this raised spot? No depression on the back.

    I assume it's black because it was in the ground? It's a 1985-D.

    Extreme heat damage. It cause the clad to bubble up on one side. Soot from the fire.

    Now that I look back at it you are right. For some reason the "L" looked like the corner of something to me. I guess my eyes are practicing social distancing from my brain.

    I don't know how many members have posted that you need to provide good photos, FULL IMAGE, for others to give you their educated advice. FULL obverse and reverse, in focus, well lit, cropped to remove all background will get you better responses.
