Hi to all. I have a question. When looking for a 1928-D MS 64 in Red I have noticed that Pcgs lists it's price at $200. Numismedia at $180. On Ebay or wherever else I have looked, the minimum I have seen it at is $300. Does anyone know why other sellers are asking these high prices when the market value id way below and remained that way for some time?

    Thank you in advance...

Sellers can ask for any price but that doesn’t mean they will sell. An ANACS MS 64 red sold on eBay on April 2 for $153.50. You can find a good deal but you might have to wait.

The redbook is a guidepost and the prices in it are typically out of date before the book even hits the shelves.

H'mm, the May 2020 Greysheet lists the 1928-S MS-64 Red at $500. PCGS shows it at $550.

Oops, my bad, wrong mintmark. The D in Greysheet is $140.

There's a 28-D PCGS MS-64RD at auction on Great Collections with a current bid of $145. Watch that auction (5 days to go) and it will give a hint of where things really are. You might also check Heritage's auction records.

Price guides are worthless - all of them ! And yes that includes the Grey Sheet.

Way, way too many people grossly overpay for items on ebay ! You cannot trust or put any faith into realized prices on ebay. And asking prices on ebay are even worse !

Take a look at this -

That's the coin you're looking for, it was sold in Feb. this year.

And $132 is pretty much where they've been for the past year - give or take $10.

That's one of the best kept secrets and something I do quite a bit! :D Stay calm and you'll see one with close to the price you want to pay, but it may take a month or two! ;)

Like all others the PCGS list is just a guide and guides are worthless.

Great example why people need to read the description and closely look at the pictures before bidding. The title was misleading.

How nice is the coin? How clean is the color (not all red copper is the same and some is "muddy" with discoloration)? Is is CAC? What do the comparison coins that are cheaper look like?

Are the ones on ebay actually selling at $300? Or is that just an asking price? Asking prices don't mean much. What they actually SELL for is what is important.

Again, great responses! There have not been any recent sales except for one that was ANACS and it sold for $153.00 Like what was mentioned above the ones I have seen on Ebay for $300.00 or more really are not that nice. Muddy, carbon spots, lack of luster, etc. I think I will keep my eye open on Heritage and Great collections. Good idea?
    Thank you again all!!
