Hello, I sell a fair amount of items on ebay such as coins tokens medals and various other items but with all of the new fees and now only being able to accept Paypal I was wondering if anyone here sells on other sites or has any suggestions. Thanks for any advice.
Hey, I'm moving this out to the discussion forums because it's more of a topic to discuss than an advertisement for yourself. Interesting topic, and certainly not the first time someone's been seeking an alternative for Ebay. Sadly, they're so huge that it's hard for anyone else to come close.
I know a lot of members here use CoinBug and also the Auction Forum on here is a great place to sell a "few" coins. :thumb: Ribbit
The fundamental problem with all the non-ebay sites I've seen is that they don't charge fees to list something. So guess what? Everyone can list whatever they want, for how ever long they want, at whatever price they want. It's hilarious to see some of the postings that they keep re-listing without checking the text - references are made to 2007, wacky silver prices, etc. They can't even be bothered to update the description! It's a fundamental problem. We don't need more sellers, we need more buyers! If you actually had to pay something - even $0.10 per listing, you would get more serious listings, with more realistic pricing. And guess what? MORE buyers! Oh and ebay/paypal does offer some kind of buyer and seller protection and we may grumble about it, but it's there. Try that out on some "free" auction site. Not knocking what's out there, but it ain't working folks.
I do understand honest sellers not liking the +FB only change. But I don't get all the hoopla over the paypal only change. Don't most sellers already use paypal as a form of payment? As a buyer you have no protection paying by check or money order. I've only done this twice once was my mistake for not reading the tos and once was from a seller I personally knew from a coin discussion board. There are scam buyers who can work the system (return to a seller a box of rocks and show pp a delivery confirmation that they sent the coin back and want a refund for item not as described) but I think this is a pretty rare occurrence. If you want to sell for cash or checks try the flea market or coin shows.
I think there are a lot of buyer who do not like to use paypal for one reason or another. A few of my more regular buyers sent me an email and said they were not going to buy on Ebay anymore because thet do not want to use PP. Another bad thing about only having PP is that the seller is charged even more fees. I am not knocking Ebay as I live in a small town and I know that on better coins there is no way I can get the prices out of them that I do on Ebay. I was just hoping there was a place that was less restrictive and lower had lower fees. Thanks
If you communicate regularly with your buyers, send them regular e-mails with coins you're offering and fair prices listed. You can bypass the whole system! I get regular e-mail coin lists from four or five sellers that's I've been happy with. Three of them used to be on Yahoo Auctions and never went to e-bay when Yahoo closed its doors. And of course, you can use those other sites, just don't expect much volume or fast sales unless you offer basement prices.
I left ebay all togeather and went to ebid. I have had a few sales over there, it is slow but it was slow at ebay also.
I sold a couple of items at a local coin show and probably received as much as I would have from Ebay net of all of the expenses.
coinzip.com is a free auction listing site. I have had some sales over there, and purchased a few dozen bust halves.

If you haven't already, you might look into an ebay store. There is a monthly charge but listing fees are minimal. I love it.
except you have to sell regularly. If you're like me, and you only sell every so often, its not really worth it.
You could take a look at www.specialistauctions.com but I cannot make any recommendation as to how good they are. Best wishes, Mike.
We are cancelling ours. Ebay is up to 10% + now, sometimes I work that close.....bahhh humbug. Try coinbug.com, the open forum here has been very good to me, and PCGS has a BST ( buy sell trade ) section that rocks. There is also coinzip.com, and Ilikecoins.com, all started by folks fed up with Ebay. the coinshow idea is the most fun, no pictures or listing times and you get to meet and greet with alot of great folks.
Thanks for all the great advice. I do seasonal work and I am laid off for a few months in the winter and this is when I list alot of items. I think I will look into a few of the sites suggested and check out the fees of an Ebay store as well. Thanks again
No local coin shops doing a weekly auction board? or not enough coin collectors in your town to make it worth while?
Thanks for all the comments. I just opened an Ebay Store. I like the cheap listing fees so I thought I would give it a try. If anyone wants to check it out its benscoinsnsuch. Any suggestions on how to get people to visit it. Thanks again.
