I have heard of people altering red seal notes to make yellow seals. Is there a way to tell if it is not genuine. any general info on this subject is helpful. Thanks
Very easily... "Yellow seal" notes are Silver Certificates (SC) issued for troops in World War II (See: War Emergency Notes - North Africa) "Red seal" notes are United States Notes (USN). So, just look at the top of the note - Regardless of the color of the seal, the note will indicate if its a Silver Certificate or a United States Note.
there is no such thing. There are N.Africa notes (yellow serial blue s/n) and gold certificates. Maybe a blacklight would show the white areas of the note as brighter than the sun as aot of chemicals do.
I am confused,I read that they issued these in north africa, and I also read that there was no such thing, not an official statement, but rather just as an opinion in an open forum. Thats why I started this thread. so how can there be no such thing?
Yes, it would be difficult to miss the big bold GOLD CERTIFICATE lettering over the "yellow seal" of a $10 Gold Certificate!
I believe The Noost is trying to tell you there's no such classification as a "yellow seal" note - Both War Emergency - North Africa Silver Certificates and Gold Certificates happen to have seals that are shades of yellow, but they're completely different notes -- Just like any United States Note regardless of the shade or tint of the color of the seal, whether altered naturally or artificially, is simply a United States Note.
Ok, let's try this. You can clearly see the differences in the notes below. Now, let's add some color.
Pete1970 , Also keep in mind the $2.00 and $5.00 notes you see on ebay are REAL notes that have been ALTERED to aquire this color !! This is a shame , as whoever done this to the notes has destroyed any real potential value the note might have had !! These are bogus yellow seals stay away from these , do not waste your money . Just food for thought . :thumb:
Ok .. That was a nice example clay...Do gold seals only come in $10 denominations? just to make sure I have it right, the yellow 10,5,and 1 pictured above,(not including the gold seal),are fakes? I assume they were green before altered. thanks guys
You are not getting it. There are only two types of genuine small size notes that have yellow seals. 1) Gold Certificates Gold Certificates were issued in the following denominations and series $10.00 1928 and 1928A $20.00 1928 and 1928A $50.00 1928 $100.00 1928 $500.00 1928 $1000.00 1928 and 1934 $5000.00 1928 $10000.00 1928 and 1934 $100000.00 1934 2) Notes produced during WWII for the invasions of North Africa and Italy The North Africa notes include the following: $1.00 Silver Certificates Series 1935A $5.00 Silver Certificates Series 1934A $10.00 Silver Certificates Series 1934 and 1934A If you have a note that has a yellow seal that is not one of these types and series dates, it is an altered note. This would include United States Notes, Federal Reserve Notes and Federal Reserve Bank Notes. Any $2.00 note with a yellow seal is a fake. Any of the $5.00 1953 and 1963 United States Notes with yellow seals you see on Ebay are fake. Only Gold Certificates have yellow serial numbers. The numbers on the North Africa notes are blue.
You'll see this alot on $2 bills, the red ink in the serial and seal gets yellowed out, and it usually impacts the reverse green printing as well. There are no legit issues of $2 that are yellow seals. The rest of the info here on North Africa issues is good and it pertains to legit yellow seals...
