    My next coin.
Sestertius Marcus Aurelius RIC 1058 from the time of the Markoman Wars.

The warrior is very likely from the Quadi tribe.

Claudius II Gothicus minted some interesting tropaion types, presumably in honor of his Gothic wars, culminating with the battle of Naissus.

    1. VIRTVTI AVG / SPQR, second phase from Smyrna for Gothicus, late 268:

    2. VICTORIAE GOTHIC / SPQR, 4th phase after the moving of the mint from Smyrna to Cyzicus, mid to late 269:

@Valens - I enjoyed the small Trajan with two trophies on sestertius! and the photos of the Portonaccio Sarcophagus.

Interesting coins - thanks for posting.

Another interesting coin from my collection.
    This time, Tropaion x 3
Denarius is probably a copy of Pompey's ring that Cassius Dion wrote about. It showed victories in Europe, Asia and Africa
The issuer is Pompey's son-in-law - Faustus Cornelius Sulla, son of the famous dictator.

I recently acquired one of these. Sear GCV (p. 368) says the #2a monogram stands for ΠΕΡΓ, an abbreviation of the city's name.

Pergamon Athena Nikephoros AE 19.jpg Mysia, Pergamon, 133 BC - 27 BC.
    Greek Æ 19.2 mm, 6.43 g, 11 h.
Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right.
Rev: ΑΘΗΝΑΣ / ΝΙΚΗΦΟΡΟY, either side of trophy; mint monogram of Pergamon (ΠΕΡΓ) in lower right field.
    Refs: Sear 3960; BMC 15.130, 172-175; SNG BnF 1880-1884; SNG Cop 393-395.

@Sulla80 ....... Very interesting thread thanks and a nice OP coin..I too have recently picked up one of these...It looks to be the 1b type monogram?
I do have one question...I've seen descriptions of these types stating that on top of the helmet there is a small owl, mine seems to show the crest of the helmet any thoughts?

This "trophy" just came in the mail yesterday, from a lot of seven ex-Littleton Coin ancients. I have quite a few ex-Littletons - I think they wind up on eBay from estates.

This is pretty worn, but rather scarce - a DE GERM issue from 177 A.D. showing a very young, beardless Commodus, on the reverse, a trophy with two dejected Germans. I had some trouble with attribution, as you can see from my notes.

Commodus - Sest Trophy DE GERM May 2020 lot (0).jpg
    Commodus Æ Sestertius
    (177 A.D.)
    Rome Mint

    IM[P L A]VREL C[OM]MODVS AV[G GERM SARM], laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / [TR P II COS P P S-C], [D]E GERM in exergue, two captives
    seated at foot of trophy.
    RIC 1556 (Aurelius).
    (21.71 grams / 31 x 29 mm)

    Attribution Note:
RIC 1555 and 1556 are similar, but for obverse inscription; AVG comes after COMMODVS on 1556, which seems to be the case here, but inscription is very worn.

There is a Sarmatian type like this, but GERM seems to be on reverse here (maybe not?).

Hi @Spaniard, I just noticed that I had missed your post - I haven’t seen a small owl in any of the descriptions I used in the OP - would be interested if you have a reference.

The Correale di Terranova Museum in Sorrento, Italy has a couple of Roman Marbles depicting piles of arms taken as trophies even though they are not arranged as tropaion. They present a nice level of detail on what some of the arms might have looked like

I have far too many Trophy of Arms coins to inflict them all on you but here are a few.

@Sulla80........I personally think it was misidentification by the seller....It was when I initially started to research this type of coin and was checking out some examples on cgb..It confused the hell out of me too as I hadn't seen this description on any other coin...Here's the links with the..Reverse description : Trophée composé d’un casque surmonté d’une petite chouette, d’une cuirasse et d’armes.

Thanks - I agree, likely misidentification - if there is something at the top it seems to me more likely a crest of the helmet than a "petite chouette".
I always enjoy your coins and the marble arms sculptures are very interesting.
