I can almost guarantee that this is the only note (or any other kind of money) ever printed that shows a dogs anus. :)

Wow..The obverse looks more like a comic strip than a currency.....People of Altona sure had good sense of humor.
    Nice note Dru :thumb:

Man would I like to see the designer of that note let loose on US currency. Then we'd have some fun.

Thats what I love about these notes is it was pretty much the sky is the limit when it came to the design and subject matter....themes and styles like these would have never been produced by a national government in times of prosperity.

Notgeld was initially issued due to a lack of small change. But the cities soon discovered that, if the notes had attractive and fun designs, people would collect (even buy) them, and keep them instead of turning them in later. By the way, Altona is part of the city (and state) of Hamburg today ...

And yes, that dog (or the depiction) is fun. :)

yeah, altona was first an independent danish city, then a part of prussia and germany until the Greater Hamburg act of 1937 when it became a part of Hamburg.

I can see why they would keep them and collect them instead of cashing them in. :)

I can't believe that I've been scanning my notgeld collection for another picture of a dog's anus. But I have been and I found one. Perhaps a bit hard to see at first, he's a white dog to the right of the tree. I haven't the foggiest as to what the translation is. This one was signed Gunther Clausen.

Necessity knows no law. :) Nice design!

As for the note featuring Till Eulenspiegel, that is an allusion to one of his stories/adventures. A "Dachhase", literally "roof rabbit" or "roof hare", refers to a cat.
