I have started a collection of the Mint Proof Presidents coins. I have the 2007s and 2008s and a subscription for the 2009s. On my small coin budget there is no way I could afford the Gold series of the Spouse coins. At $3.50 each for the Bronze metal series, I thought they would make a nice companion collection. I have not seen any comments on these and was wondering what a "real" collector might think. Are they worth collecting or a waste of money. I know collect what you like, and I really like the Jackson. I think some of the future coins may also have some great appeal. Any thoughts out there?
Well, I tend to think of myself as a "real collector" and I think that if you like them then collecting them is a fine idea. I've considered putting together a set of them myself because I think they would make a nice companion set for a collection of President dollars as well.
Whitman makes a really nice album for these medals. I don't know if Dansco or any other company makes an album for this series. I saw the album at my local Books A Million book store and was very reasonably priced.
Son, you like collecting the medals correct? That makes you a "real collector". Collecting is all about what you like, not what you perceive others may feel. Enjoy collecting the First Spouse medals and have fun with the series. I myself started a collection of these so I could get my daughters interested in collecting. Medal collecting (exonumia) is just another branch of numismatics. Over the years I've added many mint issued medals to my collection....and hey, ya can't beat the price.
I think it's a really cool area to collect. The Mint site offers many other types of these medals. Have fun.
I guess "real" collectors was a poor choice of words. Perhaps "expierenced" would be better. I like to collect all types of coins, but I mainly collect World coins and Silver World Bullion Coins. More bang for the buck, so to speak. I am new to this forum and rely heavely on the advice and comments. I was thinking about adding a nice toned specimen to my collection and was stunned by the beauty of Lehigh's Indian cent. However a recent post on the subject almost made me sick. Hence the question about collecting a type of coin which I personally found attractive and reasonably priced vs. the very expensive but beautiful coins out of my price range. I was just wondering if it was a good idea to collect a series of coins at a inexpensive cost or perhaps scrape and save for one costly specimen. I appreciate the warm comments to my post and feel a lot better about my choice to collect the series as soon as the last coin is added to the 2008 Mint set. Thanks
I have also decided to pass on the gold coins due to cost and have added the bronze medals of the presidential wives to my nearly 40-year collection.
I guess the question always comes down to why you are collecting. If you're collecting them because you like the way they look, sounds perfectly fine to me. If you're collecting them for value, from my experience, it seems like bronze medals tend to appreciate much less. But if you love the designs, go for it. If they do go up in value, great, if they don't, well you'll have only spent $150 or so for the set, instead of $20,000 or so for the golds. Speaking as someone who just started collecting the first spouse golds, and from what I've heard from jaceravone, I think he'll agree , buying them is basically just crazy. I got a fantastic deal on my Jefferson's Liberty ($360) and I still feel like I spent too much. 10 years from now when I've spent WAY too much on this set, I'm sure I'll regret not having bought the bronze instead!
Dman, you got a great price on your Jefferson FS! I sold mine this summer for $500 so you did really good. As far as the bronze medals, I just got rid of the 2007 medals that I had. THey look nice, but I just don't have an interest in collecting them.
