It’s not my coin, I was just giving an opinion as IF it was. Of course I don’t have the coin in hand and you can’t always be accurate with pics. I’m also not an expert, I’ve only been collecting for a few short years. Anyway, I think you’re coin is great. It’s definitely something I would buy for the righ price. Capped Busts that grade higher than 35 would normally be outside of what I’m able to spend.
Robert, you must be mixing up coins. Just look at the very first post and the coin pictured. It’s a VF/XF, not better, not worse. Everybody is aware it’s an overdate, even the thread title mentions 1824/1. Just read through the thread again and stop with this nonsense please.
Hey there all. My name is Mark. I am the original poster and owner of the coin in question. I’ve decided to take up a collection among the posters to this thread to cover the grading expense in hopes of bringing about peace and harmony...just kidding...no collection needed. I think I will get it graded just to bring some finality to the discussion. Man, I would be amped if it graded AU but think that’s a pipe dream. There is a sizable jump in value between vf35 and xf40 (according to PCGS) so I think grading is worth the expense (if it works out).
Excuse me, it appeared from your post that you were the half owner. I should have checked the thread and determined the name was Henry. My MISTAKE ok? You satisfied NATHAN?
I see...Henry is my son who is the owner of the coin. He is only 9 so I’m more of a custodian of his collection. He collects, I facilitate.
Not trying to cause a problem. So, my opinion doesn't count? Is that what you are saying? So, I missed the ball on the title 1824/1? You guys (error pointers) are quick to jump on me for this oversight, but fail to indicate the basis for your grade. At least I gave my reasons. No one is forcing you to accept them just follow the trail I left, then make a decision.
@Robert Ransom I'm having a really hard time figuring you out. Are you an inexperienced collector and you're trying to figure things out and you're doing a bad job communicating? If you're making an honest attempt at grading and just missed on this one, I can work with that. Are you overly sensitive, and the slightest comment is going to send you over the edge? I can come across as sarcastic and rude myself sometimes, so I understand that communicating solely through an online forum is not perfect. Or, are you a troll, and you're making this difficult because its intentional? At this point, I haven't interacted with you very much. I really don't know and this is an honest question. Many very knowledgeable members have posted their opinions and you came way over the top with an AU-58+ guess, and then seem to defend it despite us telling you that's very, very high..... Robert, I'm really very willing to help teach someone who wants to learn. Your posts in this thread have me hesitant. Please help me understand who you are, and what your level of experience is, so that we can help you best.
You are the second person to use that troll word, which I find abhorrent, the word, not you or your use of it in asking a question. I am thick-skinned, but a rather good judge of comments that have multiple meanings. As far as my coin history is concerned, I have been collecting for over 60 years and learn each and every day. I expect I have forgotten much of what has entered my brain over this time, but one thing has never left me, 'be able to justify comments I make.' I find it difficult to understand how some members can answer a question with only a AU or VF answer and not justify it. I realize there are some members who may have knowledge in specific areas, but find it near impossible for anyone to "Know it all." So, I did what I always TRY to do, justify my comments with facts. Sometimes my eyesight fails me and I overlook simple, but important things like, in this case the thread title, "1824/1." A simple oversight some wished to remind me of, I get it. Further discussion of my grading would be best held between you and me and if you so choose, I'm open to it, so contact me if you wish. My grading: I do not throw a cavalier grade to a serious grading question, rather I investigate PCGS Grading Standards, coins graded by same and others, and Heritage Auction History and review sales of the specific coin I am trying to grade. I try not to predetermine a grade until I have reviewed the references previously mentioned. Based upon this gathered data, I select a grade I feel fits the coin in question, then state it in my post. I will note that because I missed the overstrike in the thread title, I spent some of the two hours verifying this issue.
I’d also say VF30/35. Yes, it could grade XF40, but I just don’t see enough luster to justify an XF grade. @Robert Ransom if you’re having issues with your eyesight, then please accept my apologies if I came across rude. The coin is clearly in the VF/XF ballpark, as various experienced Bust half collectors stated.
