a few months ago a fugio cent appeared on eBay so I couldn't resist. The seller stated that he did not know if the coin was genuine or not. So I've had it in my collection for a while now, but I'm still not sure of it's authenticity. there is no seam of any sort. the images below are from the original auction. So my question for you- Is my fugio cent genuine? P.S HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
The photos are too blurry to really tell much but my guess is that it is either a fake or a reproduction - especially since you bought it on the Bay.
Ditto. If you bought it well under catalog, then it's virtually guaranteed to be NOT a real Fugio cent. The surface looks TOO irregular to be real, but hard to say. Bad image. To me it's the sort of coin that MUST be certified.
Try to get better pictures on here. There are some that know these coins, but better pictures are a must.
Compare yours to this one: If yours looks identical to that one, then it could easily be a copy but like others said, we need better pics to determine whether it is or not. Also, weigh it and let us know the weight. Ribbit
May I ask what you paid for it? I have a fugio , and by just looking at yours ,the pics which are blurry it does look like a repo. Well if you didn;t pay that much for it it's ok . I want to ask you a question wihout you be offended by it. Why would you take a chance on the coin if the dealer said he doesn't know if it's genuine or not that's a serious risk involved. I just hope you didn;t pay that much for it my friend. Jazzcoins Joe
BTW - here is an interesting coin on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250315240058 The seller has other colonial coins for sale that are authentic but on this one, they say they don't know if it is authtentic but that's because it isn't. Compare it to the pics of the Fugio I posted and notice how the pitting is severe and looks weird, even for pitting. Ribbit
That happens to be one I want really bad so anytime I see one listed, my heart skips a beat. But usually, it is a copy but one of these days one will show up that's real and I swear, it's going to be mine. Ribbit
Well we don't need for your heart to skip a beat now so please when you do find it be careful my friend. Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
Of course I'm not offended. I paid $28 and a few dollars in shipping costs. Which I know is well below red book value. I purchased it because there was a chance it was genuine and I really wanted a fugio to add to my large collection of U.S coins. I'm still not sure of authenticity. I will try to post better pictures.
Have you looked at the ones I've posted? http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=42255 Those are real but either worn or corroded but they should give you an idea of how your's should look and "feel". Ribbit
Yes it sure is when it comes to the coin world especially. I nerver buy of ebay there are to many crooks that are taking advantage of beginner collectors, and also advanced collectors ,that's why it's good to have all the knowledge,so you could fire back. I don't like my fellow peers getting ripped off buy these abusive individuals. So be careful next time. I hate to say this, but if the seller new it was authentic, he would have never sold it for 28 dollars that's for sure so I guess it is a repo. just common CENTS Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
It's rather hard to tell if it's authentic or not. I'm considering having it certified. Any thoughts?
First, get better pics and post them here. If they are quality pics, we can pretty much tell if it's authentic. There are a few things I see on yours that make me wonder if it is authentic but until I see it better, I won't know, plus, with better pics, if it is authentic, I should be able to attribute it. Ribbit
I would'nt waste my time, and the effort and money to get it atributed. now that;s only my opinion. Well if you feel that you should to ease your, mind I would do it.that' s your choice of course. and like toad said put better pics up fo us. Jazzcoin Joe:smile
