Proof ASEs – “Air Tight” ?

I notice that the holders encapsulating my Proof ASEs that I get from the Mint are not the same size as my regular 40-mm H-size direct-fit Air-Tite™ holders. Does anybody know if the Mint holders are air tight ? I’d hate to see that extraordinary finish tarnish, and I’ve got them laying to rest in the original blue Mint cardboard boxes.

I suppose I could put one in the bottom of a glass of water for a couple days and see if any moisture shows up on the inside :) , but I’m hoping someone here already knows the answer.

    Thanks.

They are not airtight and they are not made by Air-Tite. For that matter, Air-Tite holders are not airtight either.

To the best of my knowledge there is only one airtight holder, including all slabs from the grading companies. NGC's slab is now airtight - I think they came out with it about 6 months ago. I could be wrong on the time frame.

Prior to that - there was no such thing as an airtight coin holder.

    Thanks, Doug.

Bummer ! Maybe I could put the coins in their holders into an air-tight tube. Of course, there might not be any tubes that big.

Is that a device to vacuum seal stuff in non-PVC plastic ?

That sounds like a good idea. It would work very well with the Mint boxes, I would think. I'd have to reseal if I opened a box to admire my coin, but that's no big deal.

    Are Foodsaver bags PVC free??

I first posted the foodsaver reply as a joke but now that I think of it, it might be a good way to vacuum pack coins. The big question is... Are the bags or containers safe for coins?? I know that one attachment allows you to vacuum pack standard mason jars.

Went right over my head ! :p

Somebody here recently stated that baggies intended for food are PVC-free. Hopefully that would apply to Foodsaver plastic, but I'll investigate if I decide to go in that direction.

One drawback might be ensuring that there is zero moisture present at the time you seal. I'd be tempted to run my dehumidifier for a few days, or fly back to Phoenix in June, to ensure I wasn't trapping moisture.

I always figured that it was a good day if I learned at least 1 thing... Today is a good day.

For rolls of coins, with or without mint wrappers, I would just stick with coin tubes:

    Mitchells' coin tubes

I was thinking more in terms of how to air-tight coins that are already in Air-Tite holders or Mint boxes.
