Hello, I got a lot of late Roman coins and there was this byzantin coin in. Could it be a Mauricius Tiberius? Weight: 1,2 gr., diameter: 11,35 mm, Thickness: 1,85 mm Your help would be much appreciated!
Mauricius Tiberius, 582-602. Bronze-Dekanummion, Alexandria, local imitation found in : https://www.ma-shops.de/stollhoff/item.php?id=14832
Your coin does not look Byzantine to me. The 12 nummi coin was slightly bigger - 15 mm and 2.75-4.65 gr in Dumbarton Oaks. The legend was ALEX, written something like "AAEZ", and above the line was an I+B. The weight, diameter, the head and the entire reverse does not match the 12 nummi, and seems quite far even for an imitation. Maybe some small Greek?
It’s one of these small AE4 VICTORIA AVGG coins from Rome, most likely Honorius (in bold are the letters still on the flan in the reverse photo). (photo from Wildwinds)
Hello again, I have found this coin on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/HONORIUS-410AD-Victory-Authentic-Ancient/dp/B01DLWOJVE. And it looks very similar to my coin!? Bronze AE4 10mm (1.06 grams) Rome mint, circa 410-423 A.D. Reference: Grierson, Late Roman Coins, 732 C 39 LRBC 828-30 DN HONORIVS PF AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. VICTORIA AVG G, Victory advancing left.
Hello Suarez, but Valentinian III face looks quit different on his coins and Honorius faces are very similar to the face on my coin. Am I right or do I misinterpret the face on my very small coin? https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/valentinian-iii-victoria-avgg-ae-rome-1757241293
Yeah, you're right. I'm going on little more than a hunch. Here's a couple of Val 3's which are a close match in terms of style: https://www.coryssa.org/2698358 https://www.coryssa.org/831834 but I'm sure I could find similar ones for Honorius too. Unless you hit a hole in one and somehow manage to find a die match to another with a readable obverse you can't really be sure. Rasiel
