What would they call this? It's a little large than normal size with several strikes. Found in a bulk bag of v nickels. Any ideas?
We have experts on counterfeits and errors on Coin Talk. If I were you, before sending it in, I'd contact @Jack D. Young; @mikediamond; @Fred Weinberg; et al. I can't recall the others at this time.
Looking at the Obverse it seems to be Double Struck slighly rotated in collar. The Reverse side looks like a mess though. Could of been damaged. Can you take another picture of the Reverse? It look like it was altered.. meaning not natural What is this? Did you photoshop the image?
The obverse looks acceptable as a mint error from the photos. But that reverse has me thinking that it is 100% an altered coin.
Photos are a bid dark, but it looks like a genuine Lib. nickel that was struck again with fake dies, then circulated. The original design of the first strike, on the reverse, is flattened from it, imo
Damaged or not. It could still be a genuine error. I've got a $60 credit w NGC. Just trying to decide if its worth the hassle
Thomas is offering up some great advice. I have yet to submit anything, especially to NGC. I had quite a few coins I wanted to get graded. Right before I was fixing to submit, I bought what I thought was a great deal thru eBay. It was an 1878-S Morgan graded MS-65 thru NGC for $120. I about had a hissy fit when I unwrapped it. It was scratched up bad, maybe 70%. I compared it to some of my other Morgan's graded by NGC, PCGS and ANACS. I was shocked that NGC could grade a coin that was an MS63 at best as an MS65. Can you trust anybody?? So sad.
