Ok so it's Sunday morning the last day of my down time off from work. I'm not sure if I can or could completely retire.....it would drive me bat crap crazy. So you know when your out and about....perhasp buying a coffee, etc... And of course you do look at the change ....it nothing more than a nano second before driving off... And of course when you get in the door, and undress from the day that one catch all...you know the one....dish, baby food jar, wooden tray, etc.... and you dump todays change ,and sometimes you do get around to looking at it....sometimes you Don't! Then one Sunday morning one of those little round refugees laying on the tray so shinny glowing as you wipe the sleep from your eyes... I recieved this in change a week or so ago buying a coffee...I did notice that it was very bright . So I make it down to my kitchen make a cup...and start to examine my wild find. An 1966 fs-50-1966-103 doubled die obverse. Now yes correct it was pulled from the wild but it was released by someone kid from an 1966 special mint set. And again yes in the wild but judge for yourself the condition. So today did pay to get out of bed....as I'm thinking at least a $100. bill in profit on this find. So again this is why I am a picker.... The money shot @Rick Stachowski @dwhiz
Great find and write up! Im itching to get some hunting under my belt after a long break. Ive gotten at most a handfull of change since this mess started. Mostly quarters for laundry, so they have gotten a good look.
These images will help the untrained eye what to look for...searching Doubled dies. These are mostly very heavy signs of the die being doubled.....follow the lines to notice how sometimes those lines weaken....yet are still signs...of an ddo. So when you believe you have spotted an doubled die.....look for the next pup. PUP= pick up point The above shots are known Pups. However many times profile doubling is machine doubling. Machine doubling always looks square shelf like. No soft curve on the devices.
The surface #1 mirror like in hand , but the pups as shown in my images all are the same as to the ddo of the 66 sms.
Paddy54 - Does your coin have fine die scratches running North / south between the bust and TR of TRUST?
Sorry to bug you about this, but you posted the 50 cent DD coin, and I think that my penny looks like yours, but I'm not sure and was hoping you'd be able to tell me.
Head over to Variety Vista and try to attribute the 1966 half. There are so many different doubled and tripled dies of those that James Wiles charges extra for them.
I really hate to burst your bubble, Paddy, but I really don't think this the the FS-103, DDO-013. None of the markers match. I am not doubting that it is a DDO - it clearly is. But it is not the FS-103. This is much more minor doubling. This is what the FS-103 should look like: http://varietyvista.com/12 Kennedy Halves/DDO Detail Pages/1966PDDO013.htm
