Me too, my friend. Hoping and praying it's a FS-501. (fingers crossed) It definitely looks most like that one compared to the other handful of D/D's for this date and M.M.
Always the case with me.... I need to take a professional coin photography class.....if those even exist?!
Yeah those photos aren't gonna cut it. Until there are better photos I am gonna call it Die Deterioration. Post a full size photo. The rest of the devices that I can see also show the same type of doubling.
With the pictures provided, I'm on the fence with this one. Definitely need a clearer shot looking down at it. It looks to me like it is more to the west which would not be the Coneca #005, i.e. FS-501 (which is to the south). There is also a wide, defined spread between the lines of the "D" that doesn't seem present in the #005. I cant tell, but if it is an RPM, it would be closer to the 003 but that doesn't look right either from the photos at least. You can always send it off for attribution if you can't tell...having that expert eye look at it settles the matter quite easily without fighting the camera. After several posts on here which were replied to with "I don't see it" for something that was clearly there in person but wouldn't show up with my crappy photography, I finally started sending stuff off that I really had questions about instead of adding yet another hobby of photography to my already extensive and potentially divorce-inducing list.
I'll try my best, but no promises. Here's a couple more. Comparing it to many other of my BU 64'D's in hand, and with all of the few known matching die markers clearly present, comparing to pictures of the few known slabbed examples, and with this coin in a great UNC grade.....you guys better believe I'll gamble my money to send it to a TPG to possibly make thousands of dollars in eventual profit! Cross your fingers. This looks legit, but I could be extremely wrong.....or not at all. Time will tell.
As @bditto39 said. The MM placement is not correct for 501. It also doesn't have the characteristics of any other RPM for the year. Not to mention the nickel has an extreme case of DDD.
If you want to save a little cash and if you have a few other coins to check, try sending it to John Wexler or someone else who will attribute it first to avoid spending $50 on a big gamble that I think might not go your way. I hope I am just looking at bad pictures, but with what it looks like so far, the mint mark does not look like the 501 to me and would be unfortunate to have graded if just another RPM or even just DDD. I have sent 5 at a time to him and it's like $28 after shipping.
I hope so, man.....Last time I spoke with him was in early January when he chose a very rare coin I cherrypicked to write an article on for his "Coin World" varieties notebook column. He's a great human being.
The trouble is that 1964 was the highest mintages ever......I wouldn't doupt that somewhere out there is a bank , store, that has original rolls . The 64 dies were used till they exploded. That said way to many minted to make a find rare, condition way to many minted and dies over worked. So when you do find something that is questionable most of the time it's die deterioration or md. As a picker who at one time did pick bags of coins 1964 is kind of a flat year.....as again mintages <3,950,762> proof mintage 1,024,672,000 64 P - 64 D 1,787,297,160.
