I'm mostly concerned about the reverse side. The eagle's front breast may have come in contact with some other foreign metal because there's a greyish color visible or can this happen through toning? Estimated rating on coin? TIA.
I'd say AU-53, due to what appears to be slight wear on the wing and as to the discolorization, I can't see it in the pic. :kewl: When you post a different pic, I'll look again. Ribbit Ps: Welcome to CoinTalk! :hail:
I dont know but if you don't like it I will take it. Just kidding. Maybe one of the more experienced members will come by.
I'd say someone had this in a bezel and wore it. The wings show heavy wear but that's the bulk of the wear, I can't see any on the obverse so the reverse rubbed against the person wearing it. Take a little ammonia and soak it in it to remove the gunk but be careful not to scratch it when drying it. Don't rub it, dab it. Ribbit
Toad you would touch a gold coin with a rag with ammonia on it?!? I wouldn't do that with a ten foot pole. I think that needs to happen to it but I would die if that was my coin and I screwed it up.
Ok, I'll now reveal that this coin has been graded MS62 by PCGS. What I don't understand is how this coin could earn such a grade with such obvious wear on the reverse side??
If you spend a few days reading the threads on the forum regarding the subject - you soon will understand. They over-graded the coin.
Ammonia is good for cleaning gold but you don't want to wipe it afterwards. I've used ammonia for 20 years to clean gold and also, Tarn-X works good to dip gold, especially if it has a tad bit of green on it but like I said, never wipe, dab. Ribbit
I wonder if there were weak strikes of these or a worn die? The luster does look MS but the only way to know for sure is to have it in hand. That's the problem with pics, you cannot properly grade by a pic alone, which is like the old saying - Many cannot live on bread alone - in this case - Man cannot grade by pic alone. Ribbit
That is true to an extant Toad. However, while you can never tell for sure from a pic that a coin is genuine - there are cases where you can tell with certainty that it Is Not genuine from a pic. Same kind of thing with grading. While you may not be able to grade definitively from a pic - you can from pic tell if a coin has wear or not.
If my coin is a "MS62" then what's the grade of this 1911 Eagle? A bit tangental to my original question but I saw this coin on Ebay. Looks super but under-priced at MS63 and above. Of course if it's really as good as it looks then why doesn't the owner have it graded?? Is there something I'm not seeing that brings it back to Earth in value? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180298087528
