That's a pretty neat find. Looks like there could be some writing scratched or engraved along the neck?? With the hole at the top and the apparent lack of heavy wear, it was probably worn around the neck of someone working the farm or one like it around the time the coin was minted. One can only guess what the wearer was reminded of having that around his neck, but it was probably something pretty important. I love coins like this with so much apparent history! Cool!
Thats why I love finding the old stuff in the dirt. Wonder who could of dropped it, how hard they may have tried to look for it. Stuff like that is fun to think about.
I guess the left picture is the way it looked right out of the ground and the right one after some TLC. What exactly did you do to clean it up?
Thanks guys.. Hey Roy, I just plop it in some hydrogen peroxide for about 15 minutes. Takes all the dirt off and leaves the patina. Works great on Indian heads as well. Jim
Jimmiejam, you have to be extremely careful when using hydrogen peroxide,as the incorrect use of this chemical will end up killing you. Aidan.
I don't think you're talking about the same thing Aidan. What jimmie is talking about using is sold here as a medical aid. You pour on cuts and abraisons to clean out the dirt. You can even swish the stuff in your mouth. It is not recommended for drinking though. It's a very dilute form.
Hehehe GDJMSP posted while I was typing! I think I'll try it on some ancient uncleaned Roman coins I have...
I'll have to get out my detector and have a try at it.Nice find and you just can't beat the price. It realy gets the blood pumping when you get a good hit to. Good luck on more great finds and keep the pictures coming.
I like the idea that if the fish are not biting, you can put down the pole and look for gold (at least in Northern California). What a day if you can land both!
Its a little inconvenient finding the coins in the dirt. The dirt makes them dirty. I dropped a hamburger once, but I still ate it. Because it was GROUND beef.
sorry LETSBUYCOINS, id say 75% of the people here r above 35 or 40, in their days, if that happened u ate it, or so from my dad
Wow! Very nice find! And to think that coin may have been in the ground for 167 years...very nice condition!
A really great way to spend some time in the outdoors. Makes the effort even better when you find something like you did and can clean it up and have a topic of conversation. I appreciate your posting of the pictures and what you did to find the coin.
Finds like this sure makes a person want to get a good detector and go outside. That is so cool! No matter what condition the coins are in, the imagined stories such finds create are priceless.
