Are most counterfeited coins struck or cast?

There is no doubt that most of the genuine ancient and medieval coins are struck.

But what is the number for the counterfeited coins that eventually appear in auctions? Are most counterfeited coins struck or cast? or is it 50%-50% ?

I would say there is no doubt most ancient coins were cast AND struck. The flans were cast, then struck. :)

Better fakes are struck, and I would assume if they make it into an auction most are struck. Ebay? Mostly cast.

In examining ancient coins, people look for casting bubbles, casting pearls or a casting seam on the edge. I would think that most are cast since this is vastly easier than actually striking coins.

Yeah, but that is because we get a ton of not great fakes on here sir. It's easy of you can find such things. Just like the Omega fakes in US coinage, there are a lot better ones out there struck, not cast. The whole Bulgarian school are struck fakes exclusively. The really good ones, like the ones published by PNG and international anti-counterfeiting bureaus are almost all struck fakes.

Two groups. We talk about spotting cast coins here because it's easy and we see them a lot. The good ones I am not really in a position to identify except for a few issues I am very familiar with.
