Remember this. Mint Marks cannot be Doubled Die before 1989 because they were hand punched into the Obverse Die.

Which means many other types of errors may occur. Like Misplaced MintMarks (MSM) although only severe ones can demand a premium. I have a penny from 1983 that its mintmark is on the rim of the coin. (the person who stamped that must have had like 9 cups of vodka though)

Picture? I don't think that would be possible. Many others would of been found. I have never heard of that.

There are 3 buttons on the new post you want to make. The middle button states Upload a File.
Take a picture with your cellphone. Hit Upload a File and the last image you took a picture of should appear. Choose that file then upload. Then hit Large Image then Post Reply.

I doubt it is what you think it is.

No it's not MD. It's zinc rot.

Such a "misplaced " mintmark should be compared with a coin with normal positioning for font and size as may be not really a mintmark, but plating damage that is similarly shaped, but please do post it. Jim

I agree with Collecting Nut , It sure does look like zinc rot. Around letters and numbers is usually where the copper plating get's damaged and this lets the zinc get exposed , then it rots and swells up.

Is this considered the same? Zinc rot? Just found the coin a few weeks back and looking for clarification. Sorry, newbie here. 20200621_202601_resized.jpg

This looks to be from a worn die plus some copper plating issues

Really is frustrating to get answers like these when you are so pumped up about a find, but facts are facts. Keep up the hunt and good luck.
